There are 3 inch connecting rods on small engines however this is a brass plumbing part for a toilet like vhs07 said.

I would say it's a connecting rod from a piston type water pump, or possibly the valve rod from a small steam engine.

don't think brass would hold up as a connecting rod or any repeated fast motion
also, the bump on the large end would throw off the balance
is the bump threaded? if so, it would take a screw
If not, its a port to oil
are any of the holes threaded
are there any oil grooves for oil supply

A brass connecting rod? I used to work plumbing and I believe vhs07 has made the correct ID. A brass wire for the plunger goes thru the hole. Maybe someone can find a better pic. The other hole should be threaded as you can see the set screw in the pic.

Many small engines had brass con rods, the Maytag engines for instance. Water pumps used brass to avoid rust, and remember these old engines had very low compression and ran low rpms. Also, brass is stronger than aluminum or babbit.

I didnt know that. thanks. I worked as a small engine mechanic, had my own shop and I never heard of it. Old hit and miss engine? It doesnt matter because I believe the the ID is correct. You could ask the OP if the side hole is threaded and that should end any doubt. Do you still think its an incorrect ID?


If you have a link or photo of a brass connecting rod it would be cool to see it.

Im always willing to learn so i googled old engine "brass connecting rod" and I got the same results as you did....steam engine and water pump.
So you are right, there are brass connecting rods.


But its no matter. Unless you still think the ID is incorrect?

Fot what its worth, it looks very much like a small engine connecting rod and I worked on quite a few. Yes it does. But it matches exactly to the toilet plumbing part. Just sayin there is no doubt in my mind its the correct ID.

Ok I found a few more pics. The first pic shows a diagram of the whole inside toilet apparatus.


Second pic shows a flush valve and the float rod.


The third pic is minus the float rod but it clearly shows the brass set screw in the side. Hope this helps.

I think your ID is the most likely, simply because there's more toilets out there than small steam engines. This part would've come from a very small engine like a Creators popcorn machine engine, if it is an engine part. That being said, as a model engine builder I could certainly repurpose that piece into a steam engine valve rod.
