Any ideas? Found at a French colonial site. Thought they were buttons until I cleaned them
 

I've seen coins from North Africa look like that before.

Agree with the above posted. These seem to be Moroccan coins minted 1822-1852. Depending on size they are 1 Falus (17 bis 20 mm), 2 Falus (ca. 22 mm) oder 3 Falus (25 - 28 mm). Did your coins match one of these sizes? They are known to have a lot of counterfeits but mostly in the silver and gold coins. Also important to know that these coins are cast bronze, silver and gold were hammered. Machine minting coins in morocco didn't start until 1882.

The "Star of David" was a recent adaptation dating to 1897 when it was first used on a Zionist flag. It was based on the "Seal of Solomon" shown in Muslim/Arabic texts. Morocco used it on coins for centuries before it got to be associated with Judaism.


Here's an 1850ish Moroccan 2 Falus coin.
