So that is where I lost that.
That kind of copper is not native to lower Michigan. Was placed there by a human or glacier

My thought was maybe a kid took it to show in tell and lost it since I found it at an elementary school

That is a good possibility.
Natives used to collect copper up north and use for trade. That spread it around too but I like your theory better.
If brought by a glacier there would be a lot of what they call glacial drift. Lots of Sand and rocks of all sizes and type in the area you found it. Most of them smoothed out.

Found one little piece a couple years ago. There is some float copper, often smooth but some was likely in host rock still near the end of glacial retreat and could have been liberated without getting steamrolled so bad.. Being at a school there is a chance someone brought it back from Keweenaw but hard telling.

I hunt the Keweenaw every summer. Sadly I might miss this year. I went to MTU and studied geology for three years. Was lucky to get into some of the old mines before they got sealed up.

I go to Houghton-Hancock every few years and ive found a lot huge veins in boulders and I smash the rocks to get to the copper. I go to parks that are lined with big rocks and i just take my propointer and look for signals because every signal i get is copper. Ive also found many chunks just looking around the town of Houghton with the metal detector.

That's cool. Last year we spent a few days at the Mandan location and Pheonix. The metal detectors help alot.
