Copper leached into branches

I’m in Massachusetts and there’s a forest I hike frequently and I see a lot of sticks and branches tainted with a blue/green color. It looks to me like copper being leached up into the trees. I hope this picture shows it well enough.

I’ve read here on Treasurenet that Native Americans did not smelt copper. So how did they ‘mine’ it and use it?
