I was detecting at the beach a couple weeks ago and got a signal and dug a a piece of wood. I broke the wood apart and this little guy came out of it. The 2 ends are hammered flat at the entrance and exits points of the wood. Can anyone explain if this is a copper nail and what sort of things would it be used for? It's definitely not brass, it came out shiny like a cleaned penny. I would assume it would be too soft for a nail but I obviously have no idea. Thanks!

I used to build canvas and glass covered canoes and we used a lot of copper nails. That one you have there certainly is long.

I would say copper rivet, probably boat/ship related.
