Spent four hours on a new site and the targets were plentiful! Most of the finds were pretty toasted but I am quite happy with what I saved! The shoe buckle would have been spectacular when it was fully plated. The gold "S" got my blood pumping...thought it was gold! It's got a patent date in the back of July 19, 1881.

My find of the day is the military button. Haven't researched it yet but I'm sure someone (IP) will know what it is. Probably be a little better after some lemon juice.

Bramblefind id'd the "S" button as a cufflink. Cool!

Complete and crusty! This field was murder on most copper and brass.

Great finds!!Really like that button and buckle!!

Congrats!!

Here's the button after a lemon soak...as good as it gets for this one. Too bad there wasn't as much gilt on the front as the back. At least I should be able to accurately date it with the clear backmark. At any rate, it's identifiable and will take up a spot in my button case until a better one comes along.

Your button is listed as... Commissioned Officer 1825-1827. I suspected it was going to be post 1812.
