Anyone out there that has used a Cortes and a Deleon? What is the difference. I have a Deleon and I really like it but feel like I might be missing something by not having the Cortes. I go detecting with a friend with an XLT and find about the same amount and type of stuff he does. I want to stay with Tesoro because I am a firm believer in their machines. Would I do better with another brand of detector? Would a Cortes give me something I don't have with the Deleon?

In one month I have found: 22 quarters, 15 dimes, 5 nickels, 5 wheat 1918-1952, 1 1957 silver quarter, 172 zinc pennies, 3 rings- 2 sterling and 1 gold plated jewelers brass. And a lot of pull tabs. I have several interesting items I have found and the machine really loves copper supply line!!!

True the Cortes has a couple extra knobs than the Deleon but that only makes it work differently. What you have is a good machine and going to the Cortes probably won't be earth shattering. Plus you will need to learn a new detector. That is fun too. The best only gets better when you use a sniper coil. Also check out the new HOT coils from Tesoro. Your Deleon will also take the Clean Sweep coil for covering ground faster.

Sandman pretty much covered it. I owned a DeLeon and found loads of great stuff with it. In fact, the summer I used it was my best finds summer since 1983 when I bought a Fisher 1260-X.

Both the DeLeon and Cortes get lots of undeserved bad press. There are a few people online who seem to have made it thier mission in life to criticize Tesoro's products.

But both the DeLeon and Cortes are great detectors. As for depth I've heard they're exactly the same. Like Sandman wrote the Cortes just has extra features.

I'd keep the DeLeon unless money is no object with you.

The Cortes has notch, GB in all metal mode, a sum mode to help you decide to dig or not (averages your VID numbers to give you a best guess), a back light, and maybe a couple more features the DeLeon does not have. On the negative side, the Cortes has a much smaller ID screen.

The thing I didn't like about the DeLeon and I assume the Cortes is that they ID'd a zinc penny as a 99, a quarter as 99, dime as 99, .....you see what I am getting at. If you can't notch out a penny, that kinda sucks. At depths much more than 6 inches or so, the VID would get squirrely and you pass up good finds. With my Tejon, it gives a good beep where I have the DISC set and I dig it up. I gave up on VID to learn to trust my gut and hearing instead and it has worked well with my Tejon. You learn to hear what a bad target is vs a good one, kinda of a scratchy or sharp beep sound instead of a smooth beeep.

On the plus side, the DeLeon found my US Belt Plate in my sig and it was DEEP! 12-14 inches deep and it rang out loud and clear, so depth isn't an issue. If you already have the DeLeon, I wouldn't worry about upgrading to the Cortes, but I would suggest trying to trust your hearing more and dig those good sounding targets regardless of what the ID says.

AS A DELEON OWNER OF ABOUT A MONTH, ILL TELL YOU HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS MACHINE. ANYONE WANTS TO BUY A GOOD NEW WHITES FIVE ID. THATS HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS DELEON. I ALSO ODERED THE WIDE SWEEP , :o . WHAT POWER. I RECONMEND WHEN YOU USE WIDE SWEEP TO PUT THE DETECTOR ON ALL MEDAL MODE WITH THE THRESHHOLD TO THE MIN WHERE YOU CAN HARDLY HEAR THE HUM. WHEN YOU GO OVER A DEEP COIN YOU WILL HEAR THE HUM RISE . LOOK AT YOUR ID, I RECONMEND TO DIG UP EVERYTHING SO YOU CAN GET USE TO THE ID. AS FOR THE CORTES, I HAD THE SAME QUESTION, AND YALL ANSWER IT. ALSO ,WHAT IS DIFRENT SIZE COILS CAN YOU USE WITH THIS MACHINE, ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE A CLUE.. THANKS FROM BAINBRIDGE GA

homer007,

The Deleon takes the following Tesoro coils:

4" Round Concentric (COIL-4RC-SW)
5.75" Round Concentric (COIL-5.75C-SW; includes scuff)
7" Round Concentric (COIL-7RC-SW)
7" Round Widescan (COIL-7RW-SW)
8" Round Concentric (COIL-RC-SB)
8½" Round Widescan (COIL-8.5RW-LW)
9" x 8" Concentric (COIL-9x8C-SW)

As a side note---These coils can also be used on the Bandido II. The BD II is my choice for "bad" ground because of its manual ground balance adjustment. Sure makes detector life a lot simpler.
