The boys and I found a few things at great grandma's house this week and one that kind of surprised me. While the town has bee around since the 1700's I was surprised to find what I think maybe a grape or Canister shot, a nice horse I do have the legs that are missing but they are currently in the bin of pulltabs (Dad Dropped them oops) and I think is some kind of play lipstick but it seems really heavy with a brass or copper top.

My question is how can you tell if it's shot or just some other kind on steel ball ??
Can anyone help?

Enjoy the pics

Most musket balls were about 17mm. Yours appears to be about 2x the size, so it rules out a longnosed rifle.

It is about the size of grape shot. Any activity near there ?

Thanks for the comments. It looks to be almost exactly an 1 1/2 in dia. From what I read it is canister shot that is around that size. approx 39 or 40 MM

As for activity. Well there's was Fort about six miles away the was constructed in 1756 and dismantled in 1763, also one of the Simon Girty settlements was close by, but I don't know of any battles taking place in the area. Although I'm sure there were a few. the house has been there since at least 1875 but I don't know exactly.

I looks like the real thing but I don't know how or if you can tell? If theres and distinguishing marks of anything I can look for. I can't find much on formation on specifics.

I'm not sure that's why I'm asking....LOL

I figure someone here could help crush my hopes of real grape shot.....LOL ;D

Looks like grape shot-used extensively in the American Civil War. Most found are iron and usually rusty and pitted when pulled from the earth.

Very neat finds you got there. Love that horse. Looks like the one I bet on in the trifecta. Unfortunately, he came up short. :'(
Congrats,

MM let me give you a little advice......next time pick the horse with more than two legs......you might make out better ! ;D

Thanks everyone for your posts. I guess since no one crushed my dreams of grape shot than I'm callin it a first !

Sure looks like grapeshot, they did vary in size from 1"-2" as far as I know. No CW where I am in Germany, LOL! I do have an interest in CW though. May be more there. HH and nice finds, Mike
