I found this stone that appears to have (worn) shaping marks on it, wondering if it could be a scraper. It fits into my hand.

I believe it to be made of a flaking shale that also composed an old stone axe head I found in the late summer.

it could be...made and used once then tossed.

I found it in a creek. Probably should have mentioned that before.

When the creeks flood the cobbles will tumble. If they tumble fast enough with the rushing water they will hit a bigger rock in the bottom which will cause the rocks to crack. I believe that is what you have a natural broken rock which has been water worn smooth after it broke. So natural
 
Don't feel bad. I've brought in tons of pieces similar to that.
 
Always better to bring it home and get more information than to possibly leave an artifact in the field.
