I found in my last outing this copper 8reals. I first thought this was the red colour from the mud and silver was under. But the coin is copper all the way. I tried on the edge a silver cleaning stuff came shinny and more red. The weight is under the normal weight 22.7/27gr.39mm The sound off the coin on hard board is not silver either. I have read that Birminghamcoin factory made some very nice one plated in Sheffield( minted). The silver probably got away in the ground. Still happy with this uncommon coin. The one before i found a small farthing William IIII/1831/4.6gr/22mm. Happy with those new coins.

The soils were kind to the coppers-cograts
Not a common find for sure! Love the fact it was holed and is different. (Not that I would kick getting the reale one in the dirt)

That 8 reales is a fantastic find. There are many more counterfeits out there than genuine ones, and the counterfeits tell a great story. Fantastic pieces of history there.

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Great find! In a way even better than an authentic one. Congratulations!

Great find. Sounds like you tested it pretty thoroughly, but are you sure it's a counterfeit? You say it's copper but it sure doesn't have the typical corrosion and pitting you would see from a dug copper large cent or other copper coin. The detail is just so sharp. Regardless....congrats!

You almost have to wonder if the hole was produced as part of the counterfeiting because you would think that someone doing it after would notice the copper if they holed it.

That was my first thought, looks silver to me & the way the excess metal spread out on one side after the hole looks typically silver.
The weight for a holed & worn coin is the right ball-park.

Thanks all ,Mr.Digger. and Crusader I tried some cleaning on the edge with silver stuff it came more red. Lot people mention that its to sharp to be a counterfeit including me. I got a real one 8 reals the sound on the table when you drop it is very nice ,this one just is very muffled( if its the term) The place i found is thick grey clay keep copper like new. Not sure what else i could do without damaging the coin.

Your the one that can get their hands on it, so you have the best chance of being right, just doesn't look like a ground found copper in the photo.

that was a popular year date for counterfeits , a friend dug up 11 counterfeits from a cache all with that date .

cool an interesting find .

I’ve found many Spanish but prefer counterfeits. Killer find!

The clay on the riverside keep the find very nice. The silver turn black. The copper turn red. I have heard unfortunately those coins were too much clean. I just take the black dirt off softly. The worst was the coins are not dig... Been in the game for 11 years people know me very well around here. One good thing the patina come back really fast once out the ground. I still prefer those red ones than the toasted from the field :-) Here an another one from the same place.

cool finds for sure..

I?ve been blessed to have found 2 8 reales One Mexican kid and one Spanish. But I too love my counterfeit Seated Dime which was period and made of Antimony. But my heart dropped I thought I found my first seated time until I put it on TNet and they educated me but I still love that Dime. Congratulations on still a beautiful piece of history
