Made it back to my new spot yesterday. Dug a small buckle, a toasted flat button, a nice silver plated flower burst button, and this small silver disk. Its almost foil thin but if you hold it an angle in light you could clearly see the "nited stat" of united states on one side and faintly see the III in the crescent on the other side. So I guessed three cent piece. Just for kicks I threw it in lemon juice with the buttons. Apparently this was bad since it ate up allot of the detail, but interestingly it made copper clearly shine through. That's right, this coin was silver coated copper. Were they counterfeiting three cent peices? That seems really hard core!

I wonder if you actually plated copper on to the silver coin? If it were that worn, surely the copper would have been showing before hand.

Just a guess, but I know you shouldn't mix nickels and dimes in vinegar and salt, one will deposit metal on the other.

Sounds to me like you've got a real 3 cent silver! Not an easy coin to find.

the copper leeched onto your "made of silver or nickle" 3 cent piece ( liberty head means its made of nickle -- the six sided star and sheild is the silver version of the 3 cent peice. )

one should never mix copper or nickle or silver when 'cleaning' them -- because the copper will leech off and stick to the other metals screwing up whatever you put in with the copper items .

I found a counterfeit 3 cent piece just like that. The size was off some and it was plated. The plating is peeling off. I don't know what the core metal is.

Thabks everyone. At first I thought the idea of me having plated I by cleaning them was brilliant. But on closer inspection I think it is silver plated over copper. The coin is just not quite right. There were dark spots when I dug it, and after cleaning they were shiny copper. Also after research apparently the 3 cent silvers were commonly faked during the cw. Either way the coin is toast, but neat. You can kind of see the copper showing through in the photo. Wish I had a camera with good macro. Btw love your videos jim.

Sorry, I was hoping it was a real one...but a period fake is an amazing find in it's own class!
