CRH or MD ???? Whats better

I dont MD so this is just my thinking- a lot more physical exertion over all- hard to be done in the dead cold of winter in a lot of places-probably find more cool older stuff not just coins-
not gonna get fithy rich doing it but another great hobby

just keep stacking, just keep stacking, stacking stacking stacking

I'm a coin collector. A 64 Kennedy half dosn't excite me nearly as much as a 200 year old large cent or seated liberty Silver but that's just me. You ain't gonna find that stuff in a roll.

I own a metal detector but have never used it. Based on posts I've read, it's seems like MDing has more potential of really old, rare cool finds (like gold, colonial coins, etc). However, I think it's easier to find silver in rolls. I found over 1000 silver coins last year CRHing. I doubt there are many MDists who can say that.

I agree that's very cool, buttt... How much expendable cash does it take to search through enough rolls to hit numbers like that ? Not all of us have 5k or 10k or more just laying around in a shoe box. To each their own. A nice warm day outdoors swinging a detector is a day well spent even if I come home empty but that's just me.

I'd say they both have their rewards and downfalls but, to me, both are very enjoyable, even though I don't MD very much now, well, in many many months, but still really enjoy it, very relaxing when your out swinging. HH, Maverick.

Got a metal detector as a gift this year so im excited to give it a try, but i did actually find an 1854 us large cent in with my halves this year. Not quite 200 years old but pretty darn close

Wow you got ripped off. I'll give you 50 cents for it... lol That actually blows my mind to think they could miss something like that.

The only MD on here is Dr. Caulfield, I suggest getting an M.D.. The NIH has a $20,000 stipend/Year and it's not going to last for ever. Take my advice kid, and instead of CRH'n, go out there and get a M.D., specialize, and become a Dr. Good luck, its alot of education but it's worth it.

Dont necessarily need big bank roll- I only have $1000-1500 and hunt 10boxes of halves a week and if I could do more if I had time plus I was doing upwards of 20boxes of dimes a week before those dried up- but you do need a good dumping system to be able to hunt big amounts- that is ultimately the key to hunting large volumes-

I haven't found as much old coin metal detecting as I have coin roll hunting. However, pocket watches and rings are different than coins. It depends what you are searching for.

I did not have a great intro to metal detecting this summer. My only notable find was a cheap sterling silver ring out of approximately 20 times detecting. I found so much more coin roll hunting, both in terms of quantity and quality of finds. I'm not going to give up on metal detecting, but my heart is in coin roll hunting.

I do both as well, but enjoy MD a little bit more. Love being outdoors, plus I live in the northeast so there is plenty of history here. I will say that With MD, I spend just as much time doing research and trying to secure houses than in the field detecting. With CRH I defiantly get more silver but have yet to find any old coins. Also love digging rings and jewelry!

I am all about the CRH but I have found myself over in the MD forums on occasion. I am confident that one day I will be out MDing sometime in the foreseeable future.

Great serious stories guys. Thanks for sharing. It's nice to know both sides.

I love both, but detecting is great for putting away the oldies. Last few years I've dug close to 300 silvers - a Morgan and Peace dollar, over 20 Barbers (dimes, quarters, and halves), seateds, Walkers, Franklins, LC's, IH's, even a 1700's reale, and almost 1,000 wheats.

Roll hunting is great for stacking the numbers, and I enjoy the cheap thrill of silver finds.

I look at it like this. Since i'm new to the whole thing. I can either spend like $100+ dollars on a MD... Or i can EXCHANGE $100 dollars to CRH. I Am only 23 years old so i don't have a lot of expendable cash. Plus i live in an Idaho, i wouldn't even know where to start with MD. Although i do want to try it this upcoming summer when there isn't snow all over everything and the ground isn't frozen lol

The good Dr. Caulfield is not the only MDer on here homie. I only CRH during the deep freeze up here and enjoy digging up the past during the more favorable months. The outdoors and the thrill of the hunt is what does it for myself eh. besides, we don't have any US Half Dollars up here to search. :headbang:

Since I started CRH, I've gone through five boxes of dimes and found 1 silver. I've gone through just shy of $1000 worth of halves and I've gotten 1 40% from the teller's tray. (The teller asked me if I was looking for silver and offered it up for me. THAT is customer service!) The banks around here will not order boxes of halves and the dimes simply aren't producing, so while I'm waiting for CWRs to stack up, it only makes sense to metal detect.

I look at it like this: my town dates back to ~1895. Most of the homes in my neighborhood were built in the '30's or before. Yes, I always ask about large dollar coins and halves whenever I'm at the bank, but I'm spending most of my time now networking for hunting permission on private property for when the weather gets better. I have no idea what I'll find, but I'll bet a paycheck that it will be more productive than halves have been around here.

I'll keep CRHing pennies though. Guaranteed producers around here, and the right WAM will more than compensate me for my time. I recently closed up my first $25 box of Cu and it felt darned good, and the wheatie bowl is filling up nicely. Penny boxes are cheap and I haven't yet seen a skunk box, so if you're in it for the fun of it (and don't mind a bit of profit on the side), stick with pennies. Small investments, small returns, but everyone always wins.
