Pat Croce is a great guy, I helped out with his pirate museum. We have a cool film project coming down the pike, I'll keep all posted.

You got that right Au, But misspelled Private should be Pirate
It's Interesting to read, how a Pirate is glorified ? I have read a few books written about the man and have a great interest in him.
His personal needs suited England as they where both jealous of Spain.
He hated the Spanish because he got poorly paid and badly treated when he was selling slaves to the Spaniards, Big mistake

Pat Croce and his National Geo crew have made a very exciting discovery. This was a serious archaeological mission-not a treasure hunt.

What an often repeated joke about treasure hunting, an astrolabe and a picture of Bob Marx have to do with the thread, I've no idea.

I look forward to reading more about this important find.

Pat's obsession with Drake has led him to re-establish his Pirate Museum in St. Augustine across from the Castillo de San Marcos. Interestingly enough, an excavation was conducted this past summer about 2 buildings south of his museum. They uncovered what they believe to be the posts of the original wooden fort that Drake burned.

Interesting dynamics may occur in the next 2 years. 2013 is the 500th anniversary of Ponce de Leon landing in St Augustine. The Spanish government and other local groups are planning a grand celebration. Be a fine time for Croce and his chaps to parade the Drake relics into town and his museum. Sir Francis would be please that centuries later he could still irritate the Spanish when they least expect it!

I have been too busy the past few months to do much in the the way of writing, but the next couple of months look reasonably free, so I will buckle down any minute now.

I did speak to somebody a couple of years ago who had been part of an expedition to find Drake's coffin. He said that the bottom of the bay was very muddy, but I guess it will vary from place to place. There is a fairly detailed description of his burial and the sinking of the two ships in one of the contemporary accounts, which has been reproduced by the Hakluyt Society.

Was Drake burried ashore then dug up by the Spanish and feed to their dogs ?

Was there a conspiracy by his shipmates to cover up what they allowed to happen ?

Where did the lead coffin come from or the lead onboard to make a coffin from ?

Somewhere I saw that his coffin was made of copper, not lead. At any rate, he may have simply been wrapped in sheets of lead and dropped over the side. Then again, maybe not...

Hi mariner, Fascinating subject Drake, there is some much written about him from fantasy to interesting facts.
I say let him rest , as a sea dog he wanted to be buried at sea, The ship of the time carried lead sheeting to combat the teredo worms
they could have easily nailed then to a timber box.
Please keep me updated on your book.

I agree that his coffin should be left where it is, undisturbed. There was a proposal a few years ago to find it and to rebury Drake in Westminster Abbey, in London, but the UK Government and the British Navy were adamantly against the plan. In any case, they could not find the coffin.

Anyway, we know that he will be there for us, complete with his drum, if Spain try invading us again!!

Drake has been an endless source of fascination for me over many years, as has your countryman, Cortes, who deserves a much better press than he has got.
