I recently went back to Burro Creek, AZ and collected 35 pounds of agate. I talked to three other rock collectors. I was told where I would find a crowned cactus near Bagdad, AZ..... and I did! Just south of Bagdad on 96. Itg is visible from the highway.

Nice cactus, and 35# of agates ? Show us . ( back in the early 50's my parents became interested in agates and so every weekend they would take us agate hunting. Great memories from some 60 odd years ago. ). Please share pictures Terry .:notworthy:

I am visiting for T-Day. I will show the uncut agate when I return to Yarnell, AZ. where I left it. I will cut it afterward and THEN will be the good pics! Stay tuned. TTC

Sounds like a winner, have a safe trip and Happy Thanksgiving. :notworthy:

Great post Terry! Growing up in MN, we would look for agates too since the State Rock is the Lake Superior Agate.

Never found that many agates since the State Bird, the mosquito, sucked the fun out of the hunt!

Those are some nice rocks, SD! Mine are mostly the milky translucent variety. I am sure some will be banded and fortification types but not that pretty. There are areas around Burro Creek where the ground is LITTERED with the stuff! TTC

Thank you for sharing! :occasion14:

Those are nice SD51 ! When my parents took us agate hunting it was always at what seemed like a gravel pit ? All the agates were like dime size or smaller. I do remember the beautiful colors in them. I probably still have some of them downstairs after all these 60+ years.

Downstairs... attics... magical places, indeed! I remember MANY hours spent going over family collections in attics as a kid. TTC

Your agates appear to be of a uniform size.... from a walnut to baseball size. Mine, from Burro Creek are from the size of a golf ball to five pounds or so... a large thick pancake, maybe. You'll see pics soon. Incidentally, I sent an e-mail to Mike of the cactus above and he said I will find number five at mile marker 47 of Alamo Lake Rd... 100 feet east. This post is making Turkey sound BORING! Can't wait to get back.... Naw, good people here to see and eat with. TTC

How old would you estimate that cactus that you posted ? Are they all relatively the same age ?

I have no idea. I am told the "average" size saguaro is about 80 to 100 years old. This particular one appears smaller than most. Some areas also seem to have "skinny" plants. So, my idea of the plants age is only subjective at best. TTC

Those irregular shaped cacti are interesting.

Her is a pic I posted in late August. It is the most elaborate saguaro I have ever seen...

That one is really amazing Terry. After seeing that picture, I had to google it and found it interesting. Thanks for sharing sir. :notworthy:

Sorry guys, those aren't my agates. Just wanted to post a pic of what they look like.

Here are the agates AND what I believe would be crowned cactus number FIVE, although some people may not interpret it to be a crown.

This piece has brown streaks that will show nicely when the rock is cut!

And a few more that will show nice banding and "snowflakes".
