I found this in a small natural stream embedded in the exposed roots of a massive walnut tree. Took me a couple of hours to cut it free with my pocket knife. Wasn't about to walk away from it to get different tools.

That is a cool piece!

Looks like they pecked in a lot of the groove, and then were shaping the body of the axe. Rare to see them at that stage.

I wasn't sure if it was unfinished or just crude
