I was able to get into a c1790-1810 homesite this week, but it was very difficult to access. I had to ford 100 ft of water up to 18" deep where the road crossed the swamp. And my truck does not have 4WD. But with what appeared to be at least some gravel lining the bottom I decided to make a go for it. After successfully negotiating that obstacle I was able to locate the old homesite in a high field along with the accompanying cemetery. The site was apparently occupied until the 1980s when it was torn down, and the area was littered with iron and trash, a lot of it modern. After a couple of trips there the finds quickly diminished, but I was able to recover a few buttons and other period artifacts. The best find was a bent front half of a vest-sized lined CS button. I also made a coin first by digging a 3 cent nickel. I think the date is 1865, which was the first year of minting, but it's so small and hard to read I'm not sure. I also found a silver spoon with a script "C" on the handle, a weird broach depicting a woman's face, and also eyeballed a very small Native American point. It was a fun little site to hunt, but now it's time to move on to something a little older and more productive. HH to all .... Bill

Nice variety of finds! Looks like a clay pipe fragment in there too.

I was wondering if there was a makers mark on that coin silver spoon, it is awesome.

I don't think its that old, but it did have the silversmith's name and what looks like some hallmarks, but they're difficult to make out. Check out the pics and maybe someone can date it for me. I tried looking up Davison but didn't have any luck.
