If it "blobs" over the rim, somebody added extra metal.
Every cud I've seen stopped sharply at the rim.

I just checked it. It stops right at the rim a perfect crescent

Plus the reverse has the "mushy" part on the back where the cud is on the opposite side of the obverse.
