In some modern ships the wheel is replaced with a simple toggle that remotely controls an electro-mechanical or electro-hydraulic drive for the rudder, with a rudder position indicator presenting feedback to the helmsman.

In future there will be crew less ship as Roles become automated.technology. It has been tried and tested that some sail crew less boat via satellite from home or in some case zero human interaction at all.

There are 2 separate vessels, joined for the voyage.

JOYCE L. VAN ENKEVORT is the propulsion unit pushing the Michigan trader ( essentially a barge). If you see Joyce alone she looks strange:​
