Cut copper of some sort

Any idea what this might be? It is a 20 gram piece of cut copper that was found at a colonial era site. Someone appears to have attempted to put a hole in it using a square nail, without success. It may have started out circular, but it appears to have been pounded flat on the cut side, leaving it to look like a cut oval. I haven't found any sign of writing on either side, it is pretty smooth.

Thanks nhbenz, but I'm not sure that it was part of a soldering iron. The cut side had been partially sawed, then snapped at the point of the sawed/scored line. Kind of like if you scored a piece of ceramic tile and then broke it off. The rough surface of the edge does not look like it was used for any soldering. I'll try to post another picture and that might help.
