Sorry to have to disappoint you ...but your bullet is definitely from a later era than the Civil War era.

Your bullet has what is known as a "reeded" groove. In other words, the groove looks like the edge of a US dime was pressed into the bullet, all the way around the bullet's diameter, creating a groove filled with many-many tiny parallel lines inside it. The "reeded" grooving of bullets first shows up around the second half of the 1870s (plus or minus a few years), and is still being manufactured today.

good info, I have a bunch of bullets that i believe are civil war era that I need to date
