Wow that's a huge one. Does it feel a little light for it's size?? does it seem really hollow? If it does it's a thin wall 10" mortar shell. The depth of the hole should be about 1.5".

If it's very heavy, it's a thick wall 10" mortor shell.

Value--best guess $400-600 since it is in excellent shape. It isn't armed--the fuse is gone(where the hole is).

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the input. Yes it is VERY heavy.
It is probably the thick walled shell.
No fuse.
As a kid i couldn't move it.
Me and my Dad had to carry it to the car when we found it.

Thanks again

Mike

Very nice, that thing is big as a bowling ball! Must've taken a ton of black powder to launch something like that.

Nice find and thanks for sharing.

I agree with JeffJ. It looks like either a 10 or a 13" mortar.

10" = $450-650
13" = $1800 - 2000.
Hope it's the 13

Hi and thanks for the help guys.

Anyone have an idea if it is Union or Confederate ?
Possibly used on both sides?

looks like a stink pot. Put oil in and a rag and set it by the road.

That is a VERY nice find. I would hold on to it for now. Something like that will be worth much more in a few years. Where are you located? This could help in IDing whether Confederate or Union. I know in places like Richmond, VA, during the evacuation, we left tons and tons of cannon balls and case shot laying everywhere. I have pictures of Tredegar Iron Works with thousands of them scattered about. Believe it or not, the South, with all its deprivations, always seemed to produce enough armament and bullets for its soldiers....we just ran out of soldiers.....I prefer to say "We wore ourselves out winning" ;) ;)
