Research "Burden Iron Works" which was a Northern company who made millions of machine made horse shoes for the Union.. It will give you a general idea, if you been doing a-lot of CW hunting i'm sure you have dug a Burden horse shoe...

Most of the shoes on the left are mule shoes, ones on the right are horse shoes, and the bottom right is a corrective shoe for a hind foot. The horse was probably pulling a buggy, something where the horse would be trotting a lot, and was interfering or striking the opposite foot or lower leg. That shoe is designed to get the horse to break over the toe and have the foot travel in a straight line.
