If it's thin brass and hollow it's the base of a small light bulb.

Your find is definitely a fired bullet, made of "soft lead" (instead of "hard lead") which mushroomed on impact. The shape of its base-cavity and especially the multiple tiny parallel ridges in its body-grooves mean it was most likely made sometime in the 20th Century, although it could be from the very-late 1800s. Absolutely no earlier than 12 years after the end of the civil war (in 1865).
