Danimal's Lunchtime digs-PART UNO

As some of you have read on my earlier posts, I usually go out for an hour at lunch during the workweek. Finding good hunting grounds is difficult, as it has to be close by in order for me to have enough time after driving to make it worthwhile. Around March of this year, I found where there were three homes torn down in the early 70's and the area is now heavily overgrown and wooded, completely unrecognizable for what used to be there. The only reason I stopped to begin with was because I saw two huge old oaks about 30 ft apart amidst the other smaller tree growth, and figured it looked like planted oaks in someone's front yard (and I was right)
There's SO MUCH trash back there it's frustrating, but recently I have narrowed down some "hot spots" and have come away with (up until today) about 2 dozen wheaties and one 1949 Rosie, two buffalo nickles as well as some late 60's clad. Also I have found 3 nearly complete 1950's capguns and 2 broken up old airplanes, a badge off of an old Western Flyer bicycle (which is now on the front headtube of my son's mountainbike!) and several old bottles from a local now-defunct soda manufacturer.
Today I tried hard to visualize what the area looked like back in the 50's, and tried to imagine all the smaller (4" or less) diameter trees gone!...that suddenly made the backyard area stand out, and in the middle was a large old crabapple tree. I hadn't THed around it before because of SOOO many fallen branches and trash. After spending some time clearing the debris, I started getting good hits. First was a 44 Wheatie...then part of a 50's capgun....then most of a harmonica (I was getting excited by now)...then a rifle cartridge....then an old toy car (not too old I think because of it's futuristic style)...then, thinking silver quarter by the sound and ID, I freed a nice sterling ring surrounded by linked hearts.
I glanced at my cell phone's clock, and thought I'd better be going!...as I moved a foot or so, I got another sweet belltone. From about 6" came the beautiful sterling baby's ring, again with a heart in the center and intricate scroll work around it!
No doubt there's more there....I'll be back tomorrow. ;D

Re: Daily Lunchtime digs-the continuing saga.

Today's hunt is brought to you by the number "3", and the letter "C", which today stands for "coin"!!
Used my new larger coil for my ACE which just came in (man is that thing HEAVY) and worked an area that was pretty clear before from all the lunchtime excursions there.
Total take was three coins, none too old but all FUN!
65 clad dime
63 memorial
67 memorial

Interesting finds were the old number from the house's address (dug at close to 8") and an old pair of needlenose pliers (also very deep)

See ya tomorrow and HH all!!

Re: Daily Lunchtime digs-the continuing saga.

So does the coil go deeper? Were the finds just coins you missed cause of chance or because they were deeper?
Did you try the new coil in your coin garden? What, no coin garden?! Shame. :D

I tried the larger coil on the Coinstrike and it only gave about an extra inch. And since it was very heavy also it was too big a price to pay. I think if you are getting those wheat pennies at the place we discussed yesterday you are getting as deep as Nate and I can get with our top of the line detectors. Some of those are a good 7 inches deep.

Re: Daily Lunchtime digs-the continuing saga.

Today I tried a different spot. Literally right around the corner from where I work is a wooded area with the remains of what I thought was two very old manufacturing buildings. Early this past spring, right after I started this hobby, I found a 1915 Buffalo near one of the foundations. Everything else seemed to be rusted iron rings, gears and nails. I was easily frustrated back then when there were SO many targets and most were down in the iron range.
Patient as I am now, I went back, armed with my ACE+big coil
Way more overgrown now, and still sounding off with iron hits everywhere you swung (even worse now w/the big coil)
I moved away deeper into the woods looking for big 'ol trees or large rocks (things that were there back when these buildings were habitated)
In one area I saw lots of pottery shards and got a decent hit. From about 6" emerged what I thought was an old snuff case.
I also pulled two pcs of china w/interesting patterns.
I also kept one skinny little sq. head nail.
When I washed the "snuff" case (case is copper), it shows no markings whatsoever. I was able to open it to find it was a lipstick case w/a mirror in the lid. The lipstick inside is NOT completely dried up. It's hardened, but when rubbed on your finger still produces a nice deep red color. I may or may not go back here. There's just too much area and too many signals to check on such short hunts.

HH all!

Re: Daily Lunchtime digs-the continuing saga.

I love your daily lunch hunt specials.

I believe that "snuff" case which you say had dried lipstick in it, is a rouge compact. I googled rouge tins...not the same (no hinges)...then rouge compacts, I saw one like what my mom used. Bought back many memories.

Great finds, look forward to tommorow's finds.

Your post is both interesting and informative.
Congratulations and goodluck in your lunch hour hunts.

Re: Daily Lunchtime digs-the continuing saga.

I know you're all just waiting to see what ol' Danimal dug up today at lunch.
I decided to head back to the original foundation and start spreading out a bit from the area I have been working so hard, as coin finds are dwindling down, even w/the larger coil.
Again, with all the beer cans and trash around, I figured that I'd again move some fallen tree limbs and crap away. I am dumping all this debris into a pit area where there are thousands of broken bottles and cans. I may try diging into that area later, but for now I am not interested in separating 1000's of targets for a possible coin.
Finds today were
2-1945 Wheaties
TinkerToy greyhound bus
Made in England beetle
barrel of YET ANOTHER old wild west cap gun (geeze...the kids round there had an ARSENAL)
1970 dog tag
weird copper picture-frame-looking thing

cool find of the day popped out of the hole on one of the wheaties-an oldish-looking small bottle.

HH all!!

Re: Daily Lunchtime digs-the continuing saga.

Today I hacked my way through thorn-infested jungles to reach a foundation (there are three in the wooded area I work at lunch...one fairly open but treed that I have worked to death, two completely engulfed in brambles and bushes) I haden't hunted yet, hoping to locate another hot-zone.
Not much till the end of my 45minutes available, but then I located a "pocket spill" of three dimes. After pulling the first (a 1965) I was excited when I read another two targets, both IDing as dimes, both at 6". BOTH ended up being early clad as well (another 65 and a 66)
Other digs were (I think) part of a capgun firing mechanism, an old wingnut (ACE thought THAT was a dime too) and the item I want help IDing:
It's an aluminum arm, flat, holed in the center. Hooked at one end, and the other end has a cast urethane or bakelite cylidrical knob. This must be the 20th of these I have dug up here, so curiosity is getting to me. See pic.

Re: Daily Lunchtime digs-the continuing saga.

One of my favorite movie comedys was Planes Trains and Automobiles, starring Steve Martin and the late John Candy.

Today I went back to the woods, and this time worked MUCH closer to the main road going by (in fact only hidden from traffic by a massive hedge and thorn bush row) Way back in April when I started working this area, I remember hitting a wheatie under the thorns and remember how difficult it was getting all caught up and my shirt torn and bloodied.
When I began searching what would be the area right alongside the driveway entrance, I had to turn down my Garrett headphones as the noise level was off the scale. Mixed in though were a few solid belltones, so I decided, like the hot spot found 4 weeks ago and worked out now, I would remove every signal and see if good "stuff" showed up.
The first 10 targets dug were pulltabs at 3" or so. Then a long gasline. Then the first solid tone produced the toy Stukka bomber...(wow I thought, this is how it started at the other hot spot...lots of old toys)...then the old Train was unearthed...then a few minutes later, the old Cheetah car!
I still had 20 minutes left, and right undr where the car came from, I got a REAL nice solid hit at 6+", but the ACE IDed it jumping all over the coin scale. I decided to dig.
At about 6-7", under a tree root, out popped 4 coins from a pocket spill. They ended up being:
1954 Washington quarter, well worn but YESSSS
1963 Rosie...this sucker looks like it was just dropped...NOT A SCRATCH...I'd say perhaps AU when cleaned
1962 Jefferson Nickle
1947 Wheatie
Tank GOD I wasn't agressive with the Lesche, or I might have screwed that dime!
I left w/15 min remaining, excited that next Monday-Friday I can go right to work in that area, and I KNOW there's more there. When I was walking back, the entire perhaps 20ft around these finds was LIT UP with targets.

HH all!!

Thanks Funkman! I predict more silver next week!!

Gotta hurry before the woods are all torn down and construction begins! Have a great weekend.

Re: Danimal's Lunchtime digs-the continuing saga.

I haven't been able to get out at lunch this week due to work constraints, but that ended today :)

Went back to the same area and tried working the heavily overgrown 2nd and 3rd foundations, but it was raining, cold, and I got quickly tired of fighting thorns and left towards the main street.
As I was walking along back towards the car, I was peering through the thorn hedges along the street and saw an open area bordered by two old apple trees. The ground around both looked clear, but it was if if a circle of thorns surrounded these trees. As many hours as I have worked the immediate area I had never penetrated this spot.
I slowly hacked through the thorns with my Lesche's sawtooth edge.
I only had a few minuted left to search and targets were many. Each one dug is pictured here!
Wheaties were '43 and '56
The Merc is a '43!!

HH all!

BTW, I hope I am not pissing anyone off by continuing this post for so long!

Re: Danimal's Lunchtime digs-the continuing saga.

Dan, You are doing quite well with those lunchtime hunts. Sounds like you are trying to hack through a tropical forest. Maybe you need a machetee. :D Silver quarter, rosie, merc all in a few hours is great.

Nowdude - I told you last Sunday - you can't have a copper 43 wheatie - It would be worth $$$$$$$ - I mean literally a million dollars. ;D

damn my eyesight sux...it's a 42!!

I'm gonna start carrying a portable loupe with me!
I'll look for one an Ebay right now!

BTW Bob, I told you I'd show ya this spot...the more the merrier, as it's gonna be torn down real soon...all the woods ripped out to make room for a retirement village.

Re: Danimal's Lunchtime digs-the continuing saga.

good eye spotting those trees. it really paid off. nice stuff!

Re: Danimal's Lunchtime digs-the continuing saga.

Congratulations all those impressive finds sure beat the heck out of my lunch happy meal.

Postalrevnant

Seriously thats some very impressive finds. Lunch digs like those would be a winner to me any day.

Re: Danimal's Lunchtime digs-the continuing saga.

What a wet, muddy mess this area was today!...While what little rain was falling was pretty much blocked by the canopy of trees above me, the ground below was saturated and squishy. Thank God we don't have visitors this afternoon, as I ended up pretty muddy to be returning to work.
Worked the new hotspot for about 30 minutes, and ended up with 6 wheaties (53,58D,50D,52,45 and a 24)and one first-year memorial. Man, as the wheaties were coming out fast and furious for a few minutes, I was pumped about more silver rearing it's shiny head, but alas it was not to be....not today.

Cool find today was the nearly-intact Hopalong Cassidy revolver.
This is now the seventh cap gun to come from this area, and probably another 4-5 parts of barrels, cap cylinders, etc to be dug here.
These kids had an arsenal!!
Also dug another Tootsietoy car, but broke this one up trying to get it out from under a big root. A silver plated spoon and a cool aluminum button rounded out the daily break from the tedium.

HH all!!
