Danimal's Lunchtime digs-PART UNO

As some of you have read on my earlier posts, I usually go out for an hour at lunch during the workweek. Finding good hunting grounds is difficult, as it has to be close by in order for me to have enough time after driving to make it worthwhile. Around March of this year, I found where there were three homes torn down in the early 70's and the area is now heavily overgrown and wooded, completely unrecognizable for what used to be there. The only reason I stopped to begin with was because I saw two huge old oaks about 30 ft apart amidst the other smaller tree growth, and figured it looked like planted oaks in someone's front yard (and I was right)
There's SO MUCH trash back there it's frustrating, but recently I have narrowed down some "hot spots" and have come away with (up until today) about 2 dozen wheaties and one 1949 Rosie, two buffalo nickles as well as some late 60's clad. Also I have found 3 nearly complete 1950's capguns and 2 broken up old airplanes, a badge off of an old Western Flyer bicycle (which is now on the front headtube of my son's mountainbike!) and several old bottles from a local now-defunct soda manufacturer.
Today I tried hard to visualize what the area looked like back in the 50's, and tried to imagine all the smaller (4" or less) diameter trees gone!...that suddenly made the backyard area stand out, and in the middle was a large old crabapple tree. I hadn't THed around it before because of SOOO many fallen branches and trash. After spending some time clearing the debris, I started getting good hits. First was a 44 Wheatie...then part of a 50's capgun....then most of a harmonica (I was getting excited by now)...then a rifle cartridge....then an old toy car (not too old I think because of it's futuristic style)...then, thinking silver quarter by the sound and ID, I freed a nice sterling ring surrounded by linked hearts.
I glanced at my cell phone's clock, and thought I'd better be going!...as I moved a foot or so, I got another sweet belltone. From about 6" came the beautiful sterling baby's ring, again with a heart in the center and intricate scroll work around it!
No doubt there's more there....I'll be back tomorrow. ;D

Re: Danimal's Lunchtime digs-10/6 pics of hunt

Cool pics DUDE! ;D ;D Feels like I am there with you. I was in the habit of taking my camera - I'll get back with the program and take some on the scenes pics myself. Nate and I were out a couple days ago in Bay Village and out of the woods comes 3 does with a young buck. The buck just walks right up to Nate and stops 20 feet from him. Nate got a little nervous but I told him to stand up. I went over to him and the buck was just kinda checking us out. The does left so the buck followed. It would have been an awesome picture....

Anyway - Dude you gotta start a new lunchtime digs thread - this thread takes forever to load.

Gonna be nice this weekend. Hate to pass up going out perch fishing but I would rather get some silver than 40 or 80 perch that I have to clean. ;)

This IS like a secondary addiction ......... reading your daily adventures...........and I can tell that I am not alone in my looking forward to the next installment.

The suggestion to start a new thread is valid - those of us on dialup have to wait a huge amount of time to get all the pix - and yet I don't want to miss anything.

HH and keep swinging!

Re: Danimal's Lunchtime digs-PART UNO

I got out with my son Spencer for a while Saturday the 7th, and we decided to hunt my lunchtime spot. It quickly became apparent that I have hammered this area for about as much as it'll take. As we worked over just a TAD further, we emerged from the wooded area into the open.
Rather than leave, I decided to go deeper into the woods, beyond the area where all three homes dumped their trash...and look for areas clear of crushed beer cans an old spark plugs.
About 1/4 mile later, we entered into what is OBVIOUSLY much older forest, with absolutely no undergrowth, just tall big trees. I noticed right away that what appeared at first as a rut in the woods was actually a very old roadbed. You could actually see how it used to wind along, two side by side deep ruts.
We were running short on time, and I was following along this road bed when I got a nice deep signal, but it was more in the nickle range. Thinking it might be a Buff, I dug.
I'll post WHAT it is tomorrow, along with pics, in the NEXT installment (PART DUEX) of my lunchtime series. I understand that THIS thread is taking long to load for some.
See ya tomorrow!

HH all!
