So, I very recently got into Metal Detecting, and stumbled on Coin Roll Hunting while reading these forums, so I thought I would give it a try.

Day 1 - 640 halves searched - Skunked
Day 2 - 260 halves - 18 keepers! 17-40% 1-1964

I'll take a 2% success rate in this hobby! I'm hooked for life!

I do have a question for those of you that search dimes - do they stick out of the rolls like a sore thumb as halves do, or are they very difficult to see? My retired 75yr old father wants to try his hand at this hobby, but his eyesight isn't what it used to be, so I'd hate for him to waste his time on dimes if they are difficult to work with. After all, this is supposed to be a relaxing hobby, right?

Thanks, and Happy Hunting!

My advise would be to take a known silver dime and stick it in a stack of clads - turn them on edge on your hand and see what it looks like. He will probably be able to pick most out with no problem. To me, most of the silver dimes I have found stuck out like a sore thumb. I did find a Barber strictly by luck that I had missed edge searching though.

If a coin is in question, then he can peer at the date with a magnifier.

Good luck to you both!

Welcome and nice score with the halves

Continued good luck to you and HH

[/quote]I'm almost 50 and my eyesight is greatly enhanced by a set of magnifying glasses, and some good light. Dimes usually stick out as white, if you get a lot of canadians they can throw ya off too. After a while you can distinguish a steel canadian from a us silver without plucking it from the roll.

I have done a lot of dimes- I can spot a silver dime in a roll from 5-10 feet away.. I think as long as he goes slow and has okay vision(reading glasses maybe)... the will be fine

900 halves?? Wow! Did your banker just freak when you asked them for that many?? And are you going to use another branch to drop them back off? I can just imagine the look on their faces when you come dragging in that many rolls of half dollars!! :laughing7: I'll bet they LOVE you! HH!

Get a magnifying glass, and a good lamp.

Many dimes will stick out like a sore thumb, while a few dark tarnished ones will have black edges.

The 900 Halves were a collection from several banks that I hit that day. 600 came from one spot, but it must have been someone elses dump spot because it was a complete skunk.

I set up a nice dump system with my bank. They gave me Sentry bags with my acct# printed on them, I just fill them up, tell the bank how much is in the bag, they credit my account. I was able to dump all $450 in halves, plus $250+ Ike dollars that I had. They have been great about this...I think it's becase I was very upfront with them about my new hobby when I opened the account.

My suggestion is for your father to edge check $1000 in dimes. Where I am, that would produce 4-8 silver dimes. Then you should double check his work. If he got them all, he's in business.

Proper lighting and glasses should help alot!

HH!!

What would really enhance things for his coin roll hunting is a jeweler's magnifyer headset with light. They are very easy to come by, just look on Ebay, I bought mine from a local gem and mineral show. That way he can see and the light and magnifying ability won't be a problem. They are very affordable also.
