cool.....what is it and whats the story on finding it?

I'm doing some research now, definitely WWII, German maybe, more along the lines of Italy ( correction courtesy of TE). Got it on the beach in Revere Ma. Its About the size of a half dollar. I had to take off a couple of layers to bend over and get it. It cleaned up really nice though just some sand left in the details.

Nice find...I looked really quick on the internet and did not see anything like it but it does look like World War II era with a German feel. Bene Merenti Medals are issued by the Vatican but I don't think it would be one of those. Good luck researching.

Nice find. Revere, MA was a very Italian area with a strong Italian backround. The face looks very much like Il Duce (Mussolini) himself. Mussolini was the fascist dictator of Italy during WWII. I suspect it is Italian not German. Remember, Italy wasn't "occupied" by Germany. Italy was an ally of Germany just like Japan.

Yeah, makes sense now, Revere is still very Italian in some parts. Thanks for the rebuff on my history, I love this sight!!!!

That's cool. Looks like Mussolini to me. Don't know what it was for though.

Excellent find! It's in beautiful condition as well.

Definitely Mussolini. It shouldn't be to hard to ID.

Congratulations!

Let me help a little with the research... this is stuff I gound on-line.

1. That is Benito Mussolini's profile in the helmet.

2. The angel (?) is holding a fasces... this from Wikipidia: "Numerous governments and other authorities have used the image of the fasces as a symbol of power since the end of the Roman Empire. Italian fascism, which derives its name from the fasces, arguably used this symbolism the most in the 20th century. However, unlike for example the swastika, the fasces have avoided the stigma associated with fascist symbolism, and many authorities continue to display them."

3. 1922: Benito Mussolini, 39, became Prime Minister of Italy. Son of a poor blacksmith, formerly a journalist and schoolmaster, a corporal in the First World War (as was Mussolini's close ally, Adolf Hitler), seriously wounded in 1917, he founded the Fascist Party. The Fascists derived their name from the Fasces of Imperial Rome, an axe wrapped in a bundle of elm or birch rods symbolizing unity and power. The Fascist Party also adopted the ancient insignia as its emblem.

Kind of interesting stuff... cannot account for the medal or it's origins, except to say there are several other Italian medals with the same profile...

Interesting and very cool find! If I learn more I'll post it here for you.

Thats cool that you would take the time to do that, I'm working on the letters on the reverse.
Thanks for the help everyone, thanks Jim.

The "ONB" on the back of the medal is actually the key to its identity. ONB stands for "Opera Nazionale Balilla".
An italian fascist youth group created by Mussolini. Kind of his answer to Hitler Youth. ONB was active from 1926 - 1937 according to Wikipedia so that may give you an idea of its approximate age anyway.

Here a a link to the wikipedia entry.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera_Nazionale_Balilla

I hope this helps!

Cheers,
