Decomissioned Route 66

Route 66 went all the way from Chicago to California. Long before I was born, a large section of Route 66 was decommissioned and a large number of ghost towns can be found off that road. I figure that if two or three guys got some money together, a four wheel drive SUV, Van or Pickup and minimum gear, they could have a good time relic seeking off in abandoned towns and other places.

I only know one treasure hunter other then me, and he's in jail for grave robbing. Does anyone else think that this is a good idea?

remember one thing, most of those ghost towns are owned by someone. I would be getting permission before I set out

Yep get permission some of those owners are not keen finding people there they do know whats on those places but, you get permission your gonna have a great time GOOD LUCK and keep us up on things!

I grew up running portions of Rt 66! I remember when they replaced it with I-44 through mid-Missouri from St Louis down thru Springfield and on in the 1970s. Old 66 goes right thru my hometown of Bourbon, MO. Route 66 is the South Service Road essentially between Stanton and Arlington, it wound thru Sullivan, Bourbon, Cuba, St James, Rolla and ends up near Jerome. I drove those stretches constantly growing up in Crawford County and hanging out in Franklin and Phelps Counties.
Always regretted that I wasn't old enough to drive the Mother Road to CA before they hacked it into disjointed pieces.

Why don't you just take the more affordable route and hunt the ghost towns in your own state first?

im from the rolla area and drive old 66 every day. lots of cool places that once were are no more since I-44 came through...

Most of the Ghost towns in North Carolina have been picked over and over again. Me and the guy that's in jail hit most of those several times. The others lay in State Parks.

Were you asking if traveling 66 or grave robbing was a good idea? Sixty six runs right close to my house toward OK City. There are a number of old abandoned gas stations along there. And there are a lot of small towns also. I don't know if I would want to travel with a guy that was arrested for grave robbing though. I can just hear a local cop asking, "What are you guys doing"? Answer, "Treasure Hunting". Cop: "Either one of you ever been arrested"? Your buddy: "Yeah, I have for grave robbing"! The next sound you will hear is the click of handcuffs! Scary! Monty
