I have found quite a few plain early 1800?s flat buttons. Almost all the same style somewhat crude and no designs. This is the first with a fancy design on it. I am not having any luck finding similar examples online. Is this even still considered a flat button and what era would it be. It?s from a 1790?s to mid 1900?s site. The soldered shank mark on the back looks typical to the late 1700?s to 1840?s style buttons I?ve found. Thanks to anyone with any button expertise that would be willing to help with any info. I am hunting this site in cooperation with members of our local history museum to help dig up some of our local history.

I have found a few of those open work buttons and have seen others posted. They seem to appear on late 18th century sites. I put them in the 1790s to very early 1800s.

That’s awesome feedback! This village was initially settled in 1791 and had started to decline by the 1820’s. Hard to imagine something so intricate and well made being that early. Someone must have had some money. Hope to get back out this afternoon to keep hitting the area hard.

Agreed, maybe 1780s, but yes late 18th C.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Really excited to find this one to add to the collection. Any ideas on how common this style was? Is this something that would have belonged to someone well off or just an average persons nicer clothing?

Fairly common design although it's pretty fancy for the period & was probably used by the more well off.
