New to MD and just starting using this detector and would like to ask about pinpointing and alum. cans showing 95 with full bar. Air test shows everything like it should.
When I set a quarter on the ground and use Disc. I get sound starting about 1/4 way from top of coil thru the center and ends approx. 1/4 from rear of coil. This covers a lot of ground on the standard coil. I "x" the spot and the same thing happens going the opposite direction. So I have approx. 6" to 7" square to dig. Is this normal?
Also the display shows 95 with full bar and when I dig I find alum. only.
Thanks for any suggestions.

When I started with my Silver Umax it seemed a little wider than usual, but with a little practice you will bring the X center much smaller. Try lifting the coil some and X and I am sure you will start to learn how you can make the center smaller. You will soon be sizing your targets this way as well. Great choice of detector!

taltexan,

Always lift the coil when you get a signal, that will sharpen up your pin pointing and in some cases improve the discrimination of the Deleon. You should also change the angle of attack of the coil sweep. Angle of attack is especially important when the coil is seeing two or more targets. I would also recommend that you stay away from "air testing" and laying coins on the ground and testing. My reasons for saying this could fill a book. These types of tests are just not relevant to actual field conditions and only serve to confuse a novice.
You will not find that ALL aluminum gives a 95 reading on the Deleon, but beer and soda cans will. (Easy to tell the cans if you just raise the coil). Always be very specific when describing a metal detecting question or situation. There are many many factors that all cause different reactions in the metal detector. Joe

Thanks for the advise it is appreciated.
