Looks like a WWI period French brass Adrian-type helmet, as worn by firefighters. Often these are found with an ornate plate attached to the front. Similar helmets in steel were worn by French and Belgian troops.

I found this photo of a German fireman's helmet that looks almost identicle to mine, except this one is painted and has an eagle on the front.
