Denied access to a spot I've been frothing over :( ..then found these LG cents!

I drive by this abandoned house built in 1810 every day on my way to work. Finally I worked up the guts to stop and ask permission to detect. The owner of the property was very nice but gave me a flat "no." :(

I then hiked deep into a forest near me where there's an old house foundation. There's a 100ish year old oak growing from the center of the foundation so you know it's gotta be old! I've detected the site once before with no success. Then I pulled one of these babies up. I was SO PUMPED. Two holes later, I found another within 3 feet of each other!! I've been detecting for almost a year with not much to show for it, so this was truly a happy moment for me (especially after being denied haha).

I haven't cleaned them because I'm a noob and wanted to ask you guys what's the best way to go about it. They are in rough shape but I'm hopeful I can snag a date off them. Should I rinse them in cold water then give them a veggie oil bath??? I just don't want my noob hands to hurt them. I'll post pics on this thread when I clean them up. :)

Other two items are a modern penny (weird lol) and what looks like an old keychain or a small handle off a piece of furniture/box. The ring and what it's attached to is copper, the corroded end is iron. Any ideas? :)

Cheers and HH!!

Looks like you did fine!

Curious, what reason did he give for denying? Or did you not ask why?

Thanks man!

His reasoning: He had recently shooed off a few Mennonite kids a few different times that were messing around on his property without asking. He was just turned off to the idea of anyone he doesn't know being on his property. Damn kids, I tell ya! lol

I was so desperate, I even told him I'd show him everything I found and let him keep anything he wanted... He wasn't interested at all. :(

Well, you have established a foothold. Hang on to it. Make a point of seeking him out when you're going and coming from work. Just smile, toot your horn and wave. Maybe, after some time, he'll grow to trust you and invite you in. If not, nothing lost. You could stop and say you already know he doesn't want anyone hunting there, but, does he know of any place else where you might.

Keep in touch, ya know?

Good luck!

Sound advice man, thanks! I was thinking about making up a packet of historical information regarding his house and his area. Maybe stop by and give him that...with my card in it of course. :D I hope that wouldn't be too intrusive.

I just wouldn't push. You might push him away. Whatever is in his ground has been there a LONG time! It'll keep. ;)

Great finds Diggity! Thanks for sharing...

Great job on the LCs bud. Exciting to get a couple of nice oldies. Warm up so peroxide in the microwave for 20 or 30 seconds and toss em in. Don't use water on your coppers. It's hard to tell from the pics what the condition is. Repeat this process til all the dirt is basically gone. Then take a q tip saturated in peroxide and roll it back and forth. It you really get desperate and still can't see anything, well I go to the toothbrush :-)

Wouldn't be too intrusive if you brought along a box of donuts. Sometimes getting permission to hunt a property is like back when you were young and kept asking a particular girl out. She would say no and you would think of little things to do convince her to give you a shot. You obviously don't want to pester him by asking repeatedly. But a little "flirting" won't hurt your cause. One thing you can try if you have a spare machine is bring it with you and see if perhaps he would like to do a little hunting with you.

cool. do you have any better close up shots of them? hard to tell what they are from the pics, but kinda looks like the one on your blade might be a KG

Glad you got rewarded with those old coins in another spot and hopefully the man will eventually come around and let you hunt at his place.

Thanks for the awesome advice and responses. :)

Sorry for not getting back to you guys sooner. Been a hectic Mother's Day weekend and work week. I should have waited to hear back from you guys before cleaning the coins. :( I tried googling some techniques and went with using mild detergent with a non-scrubbie sponge under warm water. DOH!

Just added a couple scans to show condition after washing. Pretty rough shape. Any idea if these are worth anything in this relic-ish condition?

Nice finds Diggity! Those large cents are always exciting to find. It's hard to tell, but the one on the left looks like a Coronet cent minted 1816-1839 and the one on the right looks like a Braided Hair 1839-1857.

Very nice coins. Congrats.

Nice finds, you just never know. I haven't found any of the big old ones yet, still trying though. I was denied access yesterday too, but this is a forum about digging stuff up and not my wife.....icrackmyselfup.

Thanks buddy! You know your stuff! I was juuuust able to make out the Coronet. It's an 1827. The other looks like 183X, so I'm guessing 1839 now. :)

Forgive my ignorance, what's a KG? :o

I would never use water on a LC. Just sayin'...

Read Don in SJ's topic in the Cleaning and Preservation section on how to clean large cents!

Did you dig anything besides what you posted above? Any buttons? Other brass, copper, or lead items? Pewter items?
