Any time an artifact is found, and it is a one of a kind item, then the only true method of obtaining its true value would be at an auction. That being said, the main value would be based on the documentation that accompanies the item. For example, the context of the general location. The site had been badly disturbed, so the actual context (the undesturbed ground) is for the most part, lost. However, the general location, and the associated findings within this general area must also be put into the equasion. It may not be possible with certainty to ever establish that it came from the DeSoto camp, because there has been Spanish activity for centuries in Florida. On the other hand, it can not be proven that it did NOT come from the DeSoto expedition.
