Found a set-a-side field right in the middle of no-where. Searched it randomly for 1 hour to find any hotspots. It is nearly clean of signals, no old rubbish or lead & 45mins into the hunt I felt we would blank for sure. However on the way back down one edge towards the car we found all the below coins in one area. Worth another look (just about).

The blank silver is a 1790s William III sixpence which I needled out of the subble at 6inches.

We are going to look at new land (350 acres) a fair distance away on saturday. Just to get a feel & map it out ready for next year. I know he has no set-a-side but I hope he has a grass field or 2??

How deep does the Cortes punch? I am curious, bud.

As you know it depends on soil conditions, size & type of object. For example: simi-wet conditions in normal mineralised clay soil - it will dig a horizontally laying US Qrter at 6inches ish. A hoard of silver coins or horse shoe at 15inches+

:o

Are you a Cortez detectorist for life?

Unless Tesoro bring out a better machine.

is that a 20 mm anti aircraft or 50 cal machine gun round?

I thought that they were from spitfire planes

Yes 50 cal & yes they do come from Spitfires & any other aircraft that had that machine gun.

Will you ever get a White's?

Nope, I stick with what I know. They maybe better but I have confidence in my machine. Its like having confidence in a bait for fishing, doesn't mean other baits won't work. But confidence is the key to success.

I agree with you Crusader,I have never used a Tesoro but I'm sure they're a fine machine.I use a $280 Fisher and man that thing has been just great! It's literally like an extension of my arm and speaks to me like a good friend.I'll use it till it won't work anymore then I'll get it repaired and use it summore.Knowing and having confidence in your machine and what it's saying to you is the key also research to get you in the old places doesn't hurt either.Best of luck to you in your new sites!! The dates are stamped on 50 cal shells. They are every where in Germany. Most were 1943 ,44. They will only have the last two of the year like 42 or 43.

Hey, Crusader, I have a question for you...I've admired your finds since being on Tnet, mainly because I would never get a chance to find such remarkable coins/relics as you do here in the states. You say you are "desperate for land".......How fast do you detect these fields? Do you swing your machine like a madman, with a quick, brisk pace, or are you very methodically moving in these large fields in your country. Seems like it would take a lifetime to cover a 350 acre field, yet you're always looking for a new one to swing at. If you do move at a moderate pace, do you think you're passing up potentially great finds to get a feeling if one of those fields is going to produce for you? Where I live, it takes many hunts in one small park to thoroughly pick all of the good finds from it. Even after that, there's still probably some good finds left in the ground.

Just curious about your approach to detecting such large pieces of land.

Thanks,

I cant speak for Crusader but i am also in England and the reason we/i always need new land is mainly because the fields we detect are not full of trash so we get through them a lot quicker than your parks i.e because no one picnics or throws litter around in them and the main reason is we seem to get get a feel if a plot of land is going to produce anything due to old is old, and new is new, so if our new finds are not interesting enough we move on i.e a hand full of 100 year old coins makes us move on where as you might detect it to death? thats NOT saying we are any better over the water but we are just luckier with our history i guess, i dont know about Crusader but all my 100 year old coins and later go in my trash bucket
I'm sure Crusader will have another angle on it :)

So in a nut shell if you know an area has had Roman/Saxon/Viking/ activity a 100 year old coin or button can become quite annoying unless its gold of course ;D

The reason why I am desperate for land is purely to do with the time of year & new government rules. All the crops are in the ground & as the Government no longer pays for field to be in left set-a-side, then all fields are planted. I have about 12 farms & about 6000 acres to detect but its ALL in crop. I have enough land to last the rest of my life & some. My technic is simple - I cover the land systematically at a moderate rate, my Dad goes slower & I normally double back to finish his run. I will miss stuff for sure but the net gain by land covered in time available more than makes up for it. With so many good fields available in a very short window, speed is actually the key to success. Finds speak for themselves. Of course I could go slow & get the odd thing I may have missed but overall come home with far less. Remember we go back and hit these fields year after year so I'm not worried about missing the odd thing.

I understand what your saying. What I didn't cover in my above answer is that before I start a systematic search of a field I need to know it the best use of time. We will scout a new area which quite often has very little in it & as Castle says you get a feel for if its worth it. Then if you find a good area you hit it hard. If you don't on to the next field. Doesn't mean we can't go back. The choice of field is more to do with crop rotation, type of crop (ie bean storks are impossible to detect) & harvesting timings etc.. We have to continually drive around & survey the land. Its not as though a farmer will ring us up and says - "my farmer worker has just rolled that favourite field of yours"

After you have read my response, I would like to turn the tables. How would you search 6000 acres in less than a months window?

I just got a lot of answers to what I have been wondering about. Thanks for going into detail about why you move around a lot and why you don't seem too excited about finding coins we would jump for joy over here in the states. I wish I had the problem of throwing the 100 year old coins in a junk bucket, lol.....I hope you find a new place soon and way to go on the nice finds too. Have a good one
