Detecting large swells in trees that may hold hidden treasure.

I have heard that bank robbers, outlaws gangs and others in the past hid cashes in trees and that one of the ways to recognize one of these trees was to look for large swells and try detecting them. Any of you ever found something hidden inside a tree?
