Crazy day at the farm today. I don't know what got into my old Tesoro, but it was coming up with finds like crazy in areas I've hit many times. It was beeping as if I was in "all metal" mode, but I wasn't. I can only figure it was due to one of two things:
1) A new 9 volt battery brand, or
2) My old Tesoro knows I have a new Tesoro coming in the mail any day now, and figured it better prove itself again quickly. ;D
I mentioned the other day that I was running out of search areas until I can go back out into the woods safely (ticks, snakes). Now it looks like I need to re-hit all the safe grass areas again. Today I pulled up more coins and more old buttons in areas I thought were hunted out. Boy, was I wrong.
So folks, after not posting anything decent for awhile, here are my finds for today:
*A 1935 silver Quarter. Yeah, Baby!!! :D
*A 19?? Buffalo nickel and a 1952 nickel. They were in the same hole!
*A 1917 & a 1946 wheat that were bonded together. Also a 1940 wheat in a separate hole.
(The 1917 wheat is my oldest wheat so far)
*Three old buttons. One says "Double Gilt - No. 2" on the backmark. The other two have no lettering.
Any idea of the age of the "Double Gilt" button? The front is just flat / plain.
*A piece of a spoon. It feels heavy like lead. No markings, just the high ridge pictured. Could it be CW era?
*A cool looking "reward" tag.
Well, that's all folks. Thanks for looking, and have a great week.

Gypsy, you amaze me at you ability to research anything and everything!

Never hunted out! ;D Awesome finds there, MM!

Congrats! Nana :)

Great find's Doug....I know a low battery doesn't help no matter what you're swinging, they tend to get a little funny on ya.The lead whats' it is definetly a seal.Congrat's on the coinage and silver too!I'd ask how many acre's left but like Nana said...Never hunted out...Sound's like a restart to me....Nice job...

MM, I think you may have a coin super glued to the bottom of your coil............Don't know who would do such a thing ::) ;D Or maybe it was the Coin Fairy looking out for you ;D

Awesome finds MM! Thanks for the pics and HH, Mike

Last year I owned a Tesoro DeLeon which is in the uMax family. It would go nuts if the batteries weren't right.

Tesoro puts a cheap brand of batteries in with their new machines and when I loaded them the DeLeon was highly unstable and falsed like crazy. I was going to send it back but decided to load some Alkaline CopperTops and it ran smooth as silk.

What's your new Tesoro?

Hey Mod!

It was so cool to see the reward tag! I have one that is shaped exactly the same, but the design is a bit different.

I like your beaded edge, mine is a straight raised edge. Mine also says "If found return to and receive reward" in the same position as yours. Mine has four ribbon folds, and the end is being held in an eagles beak(lots of detail in a small space). The last fold has the date stamped in it "1926". It appears to be made of a nickel-silver composite.

I found mine some 20+- yrs ago. How cool is this!

I am now curious as to the maker/s. It seems to me that these look like the names were hand stamped in the metal, kinda like the "Lucky Star" tokens.

Congrats on a really neat relic! It made my day to see it on your post.

Good luck!............HH

Great Job MM !
The frost may indeed have played a part in shifting the targets like Sheldius mentioned. The new battery probably helped as well.

It may also be a combination of that and headphones. Were you using headphones?

Love the reward tag and of course the button and silver quarter are also very cool!

Congratulations!

Ridley

Dave,
I wasn't using the headphones this time. It may be the battery? I went back at lunch today, it was raining slightly, and the Tesoro was still picking up signals great.

Badger,
I bought a Tesoro Silver Umax from Romeo. It is basically the next step up from my Cutlass model. Great price, so I couldn't pass it up. ;D
Thanks,
MM

Papa,
The only glue I have is on my wallet, so my wife doesn't take it. ;D
I think the coin Gods just gave me a lucky break yesterday.
How's that ol' mule of yours doing? Need any extra shoes for it yet? ???

I think you & Nana are right. I just need to restart over on the areas I've hit. Even if I don't find anymore old coins, I'm happy with old buttons too.

President of Wake Forest University
Thurman D Kitchin 1930

Gypsy,
I want to thank you for that great info. You truely are amazing! The family that owns the property now is the Kitchin family. They have owned the house & property since 1945. It was a dairy farm before. Not sure who owned it before them? Some of my finds date over 100 yrs before they owned it. I'm 99% sure there was an older house previously on the current spot.
The sons name is Thurman (the name on the tag), and he is about 70 yrs old. The Thurman Kitchin who was president of Wake Forest University in 1930 had to have been his father (senior) I bet. Wake Forest Univ. used to be about 5 miles away from this house back in those days. Now it is a seminary, and Wake Forest Univ. is actually in Winston-Salem, NC now.
That is just fabulous info you found there. I think I'll offer the tag to the son (junior) and see if he would like it. Very cool.
Thanks so much,
MM

awesome day out !! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
a 10 smiley type of day..... ;D

Nice finds, MM. I wonder what that tag was attached to for a reward to be offered for it's return. My guess would be a key chain, but who knows. Have you shown it to the doctor's son?

I'm going to e-mail him a picture tonight. He lives in Florida now. I've found a lot of dog vaccine tabs from the 1940's on the property, but this doesn't look like a pet tag. Not sure what it is from?

Great finds ModernMiner. I think you might find a spot-of-gold at that site.

Good Luck.

Thanks Ant.
I'll settle for a golden pot at this point. ;D
After finding that 1874 IH about a month ago at this farm, I'm hooked! I have about 160 acres to go, so hopefully the farm gives up a few more coins. A jar full would be great. ;D

well it could be the weather (rain or melting snow) can cause changes in the soil conditions--the ground as it unfreeze's shifts the soil below ground causing differant angles than before plus the wet , damp soil is better for conductivity in the metals which will made the the detector ring em up.
