Crazy day at the farm today. I don't know what got into my old Tesoro, but it was coming up with finds like crazy in areas I've hit many times. It was beeping as if I was in "all metal" mode, but I wasn't. I can only figure it was due to one of two things:
1) A new 9 volt battery brand, or
2) My old Tesoro knows I have a new Tesoro coming in the mail any day now, and figured it better prove itself again quickly. ;D
I mentioned the other day that I was running out of search areas until I can go back out into the woods safely (ticks, snakes). Now it looks like I need to re-hit all the safe grass areas again. Today I pulled up more coins and more old buttons in areas I thought were hunted out. Boy, was I wrong.
So folks, after not posting anything decent for awhile, here are my finds for today:
*A 1935 silver Quarter. Yeah, Baby!!! :D
*A 19?? Buffalo nickel and a 1952 nickel. They were in the same hole!
*A 1917 & a 1946 wheat that were bonded together. Also a 1940 wheat in a separate hole.
(The 1917 wheat is my oldest wheat so far)
*Three old buttons. One says "Double Gilt - No. 2" on the backmark. The other two have no lettering.
Any idea of the age of the "Double Gilt" button? The front is just flat / plain.
*A piece of a spoon. It feels heavy like lead. No markings, just the high ridge pictured. Could it be CW era?
*A cool looking "reward" tag.
Well, that's all folks. Thanks for looking, and have a great week.

Nice finds, MM. I wonder what that tag was attached to for a reward to be offered for it's return. My guess would be a key chain, but who knows. Have you shown it to the doctor's son?

Mike

I'm going to e-mail him a picture tonight. He lives in Florida now. I've found a lot of dog vaccine tabs from the 1940's on the property, but this doesn't look like a pet tag. Not sure what it is from?

I just received an answer back from the property owner Thurman (approx. 70). He said that "Dr. T.D. Kitchin" on the tag was his GRANDFATHER. That tag has to be fairly old I guess.
He didn't respond back as to what it was attached to though?

Wow. A SWAG (scientific wild ass guess) on my part would say that very possibly puts the tag into the 1800's. Grid those areas off, hunt them from different angles, go there after a rainy day, do all those things that get more finds. Can't wait to see what that new Tesoro will produce for you.

MM,I do need some new mule shoes. You got any rubber ones ? I keep waking up the wife when I sneak out to check the still ;D

I love that cannon and the story/history growing around the tag is pretty awesome!

Mike,
That's what I was figuring too. The tag could be into the late 1800's, or early 1900's. Thurman, the 70 yr old grandson, is who gave me permission to search the farm. His mother passed away in 2005, at the age of 92. That puts her born back in 1913. So her father, Dr. T.D. Kitchin, had to have been born at least into the late 1800's.
Gypsy's info shows him being president of Wake Forest Univ. in 1930. I would think he would at least of been about 50 yrs old to hold that position. At least that's my SWAG on the tag. Hey, that rhymes. ;D
I'll keep looking though.
Thanks,
MM

really nice finds. I've noticed that my Explorer likes fresh batteries also and when the ground is wetter, every thing seems smoother and finds are deeper. 160 acres! that would take me a lifetime to hunt all that, good luck.

I like the cannon ;D nice finds though
