Yes it is happening. I feel like a part of me will be thrown away. I just read that they started demolishion of Tiger Stadium. So many good times I had their as a boy growing up and many more as I grew older. The history that was made in that stadium I will never forget. I keep saying to myself...if I could have only seen one more game there, but it never happened. I can still hear the lineup of Mickey Stanley, Norm Cash, Willie Horton, Gates Brown, Eddy Brinkman, Bill Freehand, Al Kaline, Mickey Lolich, Denny Mclain, Jim Northrup, Dick McAuliffe, Don Wert and so many others. I was lucky enough to see this group on gentleman a few times in 1968 and then other famous tigers later on like Kirk Gibson, Lance Parish, John Hiller, Ron Leflore, Rusty Staub, Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammel, John Wockenfuss, Tommy Brookens and many others. I wish they would have made the stadium a museum for baseball. Baseball at its finest. I am not sure what it is, but baseball back them seemed so much different then it is today. Back then it was all about the game. You could get to the park early and the guys would be more then willing to sign autographs and talk to the crowd and you could afford to take the family. Now its about $$$$ without caring about the fans or especially the kids. The new stadium doesn't have that feeling the old one does/had. Its not seasoned as well and it probably won't get that feeling until it gets 40-50 years behind its belt. The team makes the history and the history makes the stadium and I will miss Tiger Stadium very very much! With that said, I hope some of you that live in the Detroit area are going down there to detect. There is virgin ground under that stadium and I can only imagine what lies under it. Good luck to you guys if you go down there and if you get the chance, take off the headphones for just a minute and listen to the history that was made on that very spot. I am sure you will hear the roaring of the crowd....A tigers roar!

I'm in mourning over this to. I have been driving by and there is no way to be able to detect it right now, there is a 10 foot fence all the way around it. I suppose if they tear the streets up or sidewalks around it that would be open. There was baseball played on that site long before the stadium was built in 1912 - and there are probably thousands and thousands of old coins on that site. Too bad I don't know anyone on the inside . . .

Ian

si if there tearing it down why cant we get in a detect be the best time now.. maybe we can get 4 or 5 guys to go.. you know what ill see if i can get a hold of someone. if the city is in charge dosent that mean it public?

I assume they are concerned about liability of anyone being on site. Heck, if you can get us permission, we would all owe you big time!! Tell them we'll wear a hard hat!

I look at it like this, at some point they are going to scrape that land and grade it, that is the time to be there - especially if they dig down 4 or 5 inches. I'll be you will find coins on top of the ground. So let's all just keep an eye on it and post here if you see that it is accessible.

Ian

I can say this that my mother in-law is friends with mrs ilitch(husband owns tigers), so i can say we may have a big chance but we may have to sign a waiver

This post really saddens me. My dad would take a day off work each summer. We would go on game day, spend $1.00 per ticket. Had a ball. I attended a World Series game there in 1968 and the All Star Game in the early seventies. This was the one that Reggie Jackson hit it off the light at the top of the stadium in right-center. Never have I seen a ball travel like that.

The business I work for took us to a Washington Nationals game a couple of weeks back. $15.00 for a ticket and bus ride. I saw my daughter become a baseball fan that evening. The stadium is great, but they built it in a slum. Everything was expensive. A beer, not a bottle, but a plastic cup of draft was $7.50. I didn't buy any. My daughter wanted a t-shirt, she's 10.......$30.00. They have no conscience when it comes to prices in the park.

Yep, I just heard that it belongs to city of detroit . . . so we would have to get permission from Kwame Kilpatrick - I'll text him about it . . . 8)

I would cut off my pinky toe for a chance to detect there. That's some prime hunting!

And yes i did find out that it is the property of detroit so its public, im going down to the colman young building monday. unless someone knows where city hall is for sure. I will ask, if they say its ok ill get written permission and ill post here or e-mail to get 4 or 5 people to go with me...I will do everythingf ican to get in there, or find out when there building to go there during construction

I'm going to be in Detroit on business Monday, but would would like to spend an hour or two at the corner of Michigan and Trumbul. Let us know what you find out regarding the possibility of MD'ing at Tiger Stadium.

Umm, you all know that before baseball was played there, this used to be the site of the a fair grounds, right?

One thing of concern is how much of the dirt got shifted around in the last century. Your good diggings might be three feet down or in a landfill across town.

Happy Hunting,

Scott (MI)

right now they dont want anyone by there since the demolition which i can understand. but the thing is part of the baseball diamond is going to still be there. not sure if its all or some. but if it was a fair ground then when the demoliton is done it could be fun. i have to check in 2 weeks

Thanks for checking into this Mike. Although I usually hang out in the Shipwrecks forum, I live and breath right here in Sterling Hgts., Mi. If permission is granted, I'd love to be counted in as one who would love to detect the old fairgrounds that lie underneath. Although my detector is set up for underwater/saltwater, I'm sure she would ring in on a few goodies.

Although a Indian Fan lol Id still make the journey north to detect this awesome site if permission were granted. Spent many nites there watching the 2 of them do battle. Love the new stadium 2. Anyway count me in if there is room lol. Dave

I just returned today from Detroit. I could see from my corporate office that there are cranes at the site and are starting to dismantle the outfield. I would also like to be included in a hunt if permission is granted.

Last I heard, they were talking about saving the infield. Pretty much from dugout to dugout and in and around home. This part of the stadium was to remain as well. Office's and a museum.

Here are some pics I have from the past week or so.

I live only about 2 miles west of the Stadium, first before that was a fairground, way before it was a fairground , firing range and drill site from the 1730,s, for the French, later the British until our troops last used it around 1829, give or take a few years. It helps when you have relatives living in France and other parts of Europe that can provide you with some old maps.Second, Ya the city owns it but the Supervisor running the demolition or building crew has the last say, its up to him, not the dum ass city.Be nice to him, give him 40 or $60 bucks, say you give him some of your finds and you,ll be part of the family with him.Like that big crew that was doing Michigan Ave a few years back, great folks.I think I saw them last doing that US 23 south bound towards Dundee last year and I think 7 mile rd to, its not Aldinger, name escapes me right now.Now if it s going to be a city crew than well you can add STUPID,DUM,ARROGANT and IGNORANT, they won,t let us in, even if I probably offered them $100 for the day.Hey if we can,t have any and you see them metal detecting and not letting us in , Phone call to the IRS should make there day, a city construction crew found a cache of Gold and Silver you say???Hmmmm should look good in the next day Free Press and News, together with all the other problems they are having.

Im writing a small letter to the free press about hunting the grounds. it be cool to see what it said about hunting it in the papper.
