There are a number of pieces of evidence that the diary is a fake. The most compelling is that some of the diary passages are directly transcribed from texts that didn’t exist at the time the diary claims to have been written.

The plagiarised sections come from Theodor Schieder’s post-war compilation of testimonies from German refugees and expellees during what became known as “The Flight”. They were first published in instalments over five volumes volumes between 1953 – 1961.
