Detector(s) used
garret ace 250, garret ace 300I
Primary Interest:
Relic Hunting
Hello Tnet,

I’ve decided I want a new detector, currently using the garret ace 300i. Using it mosty to hunt on grass fields or plowed fields.

I can get a minelab safari for €530 or a garret AT pro Zylink for €510. I don’t have much bugdet and those are the only middle lvl occasions he has. Both are from 2017 and are in good shape. The minelab also got a new coil.

I mosty hunt for relics and old coins.

If u where to choose which would be the best ?

Thanks !

I'd choose the Safari as it is a more capable than the ATP.... Multi-Frequency....

The SAFARI is an easy to use mid-level coin & treasure detector with enhanced multi-frequency technology and discrimination. This detector is great for high performance treasure hunting.

I'm not sure what that comes to exactly in U.S. dollars ($580-90 or so?). In that range, you can just about get a new Equinox 600. If you only have those two to choose from and you don't need it be be waterproof, I'd get the Safari. It's multifrequency and has much of the capabilities of the Etrac/CTX.

The Equinox 600 cost around €750/800 here.. and the occasions are scarce or not to be found. But thanks for the info ! Do you know of the slow swing speed is really that slow on the safari ?

Safari is a great detector, but it's processor is slower than the new releases so you would have to swing it slower.

My current one (garret ace 300i) is from 2015 or 2016 not sure. Would they behave the same ?

Given those 2 choices I would choose the Safari as well. I used an Etrac for several years and a friend used the AT Pro and we often compared signals. I think AT Pro would be easier to learn but either would be great for your needs.

Ace 250 not even in the same league with the bell tone and floppy shaft. Never tried the 300. I didn't find the Etrac swing to be too slow but it is heavier than the AT Pro which can be swung quicker. Also nice to have the cord in the collapsible shaft and the rechargeable batteries. Plus I prefer the multi-frequency as stated above.

I meant would they have the same swing speed.

Going to have look at the safari tomorrow, really excited to learn the machine and hopefully find some more on my favorite fields !

I have a friend with a Safari and the processor speed kills him. Not literally, but you need a fast processor speed.

Well everything seems slow after swinging a Deus... Is the Safari slower recovery than the Etrac?

Yes it is slower than the ETrac, The Safari was put out to replace the Quantro, Quantro had an even slower processor. Safari is a very good detector and you dont sweep it fast, but then again you dont have to sweep it real slow either. I use to own one and sweeping was not a problem but I have never been one who likes to sweep fast, usually 2-3 seconds to the left, 2-3 seconds to the right..

I’ve had the Safari. I would go for the other suggestions. I had it before I bought Treasure_Hunter’s Etrac. The Etrac was a amazing silver hound. I only got rid of it because I wanted something just for relics

I know you said Garrett/Minelab
But for the money I would check into the new nokta simplex
254.00 usd with no wireless headphones
339.00 usd with wireless headphones..
Been watching many good videos and have a friend that has a simplex he loves it..

I personally a minelab owner and love my nox..
Hope that helps.

I own both Safari and ATP. Safari is a silver monster just like Etrac and it is not slower. ATP is easier to swing for hours since it is much lighter than Safari which is over five pounds. I also usually have 8" coils on both of them for coin hunting but in your part of the world you may prefer the stock 11" coils. If I had one choice as you have it would be Safari although my Safari sleeps a lot since I got my Nox 800. ATP sleeps most of the time now too.

About the only time swing speed would be an issue is in an area with lots of targets. In those areas, you just need to slow down and listen closely. A small coil in those areas will help too. When we talk about a slower machine, we mean the time it takes for the processor to report on one target, reset, and then report on the next target. If you swing too fast, the lag between the two reports can mask the second (or more) target(s). You can do a speed test on any machine by setting up some targets close together (or even overlapping) and swing at various speeds to see where the optimum speed vs. response is. The Deus and Equinox are the current champs on speed right now.

It is like this with me i like Garrett and Minelab and i use both not much help but i would not get rid of either of tham..

I know someone that swings a Safari and he swears by it.
