I have been detecting for several years with moderate success. Since I am a "snow bird" from Indiana, I have the opportunity to detect in the clay:-) and the sand. It is apparent from reading a lot of posts here that the successful folks dig "Everything".

My problem is being disciplined enough to do just that. whether I am on the beach and am getting pull tab signals or hunting an old homestead with all of the nails and iron ,I get caught up in the excitement of the hunt and tend to dig the "Good sounds"

Did you folks that dig everything always do so? If not what motivated you to start?

Thanks for all of the great posts!! Have a Great New Year !

Now mind you this is my first year detecting... My motivation for digging everything : The tone for Toonies is so loud it sounds like a big chunk of iron junk. ;) Even digging a little junk to get one, sure beats digging 200 pennies. ;D

Started detecting when we used BFO detectors, then came TR's and then VLF's with discimination. You don't have to dig everything, but in doing so you will recover more items that would read the same as a nail or pull tab. Even VDI numbers on a DFX for example can be more than one type of target.

When I first started I did dig everysignal, and for the most part even now, if the signal sounds good I'll dig it.

I mean like yesterday, I had a good sounding 91-93 VDI reading about six inches down. I was digging right next to
a dead, small, tree and came upon the root a couple of inches down.

Well the signal then read 4.5 inches and still sounded good. I dug under the roots to a depth of about 7 inches and still no
target. Obviously it was no a coin. ;)

I cut the tree root and went deeper and pulled out an old colonial type of garden hoe. Not a bad find and since I was
already there why not get what I was listening to rite.

Although I have had a detector for many years, it has only been the last 3 months that I got serious about it. I'm new enough that I still enjoy digging most things including cents. Here are the two things that convinced me to dig everything.

About 3-4 weeks ago I was in a local "hunted out" park. I got a mixed signal (part good & part bad). Decided to dig it and from the top end of the hole came a beautiful 1916-S merc. the other side of the hole contained a rusty nail. That was causing the mixed signal.

last Friday on Padre Island I got a signal that indicated another cent. I dug it anyway and up came a men's 10K gold wedding band.

Go Hoosiers :)

I was born and raised in Indiana (Southern Part) What part are you from?

This going for everything hurts my back.Having said that i tried all metal mode and coin mode on my gta-550.I missed coins and buttons in the coin mode.Turned on all metal and did better.

For me, it depends. If it's a fresh site and not too trashy I will go over it quickly and get all the obvious signals. As the good targets get scarce I will become less particular and start digging more of the iffy signals. After many trips to the same area I end up digging the foil, pulltabs and everything else.

I dig everything at the beach accept obvious iron.

If a site is very trashy I will take a small area and dig everything. This allows you to see what's under the trash and gives you a good idea of what the place may offer.

Thanks guys for the replies!
As soon as my detector to gets back from the shop(broken wire in coil connector). I'm going to the beach and experiment with digging, hopefully, some good sounds and then go back over the same area and dig everything. I may try to record my digs to verify results. Have any of you done this? I will probably discriminate Iron out even though it may mask other signals.

Keep Smilin'

Dig everything!?

Im resurrecting this old thread because I have changed my tune a little on the dig everything approach.

First let me say that for now I am a freshwater hunter. Regardless, I still dont want to dig everything. However, I DO want to be alerted to the presence of ferrous signals with some form of reliable IRON ID.

Yesterdeay I was using an improvised detector, my Tesoro Golden, since mty TIget Shark has gone home for some TLC. I bagged and wrapped and pretty much wade-proofed the Golden and hit the fresh water beach. I hunted in vey low DISC, just around "Iron" on the dial. For those who dont know it, The Golden has a great iron ID suite once you learn it and I was very pleased with the results.

Yes, I found plenty of bobby pins/barrettes, washers and ferrous what-have-you's , but I knew what they were after a bit and could then CHOOSE to dig them. Ditto the other iron hits. I dug a lot of them just to be sure, but by the end of the search, I was running in high confidence mode on iron.

My whole point is knowing its iron gives you that choice. I dug everything else, as always.
Hereafter, this is my new GOLD STANDARD for water detectors - great IRON ID. Now which salt ready detector offers that?

Sandman said it best but the ultimate decision is up to you. As for me, I dig them all.
