Looks like a blowhole. Pics of the front and back would help.

Beauty. Be careful they're delicate. I found one and a Neanderthal from Maine crushed it. Lol
That looks like one of the sturdier, heavy brass ones.

Yeap, that blowhole would have been gilt at one stage. (Looks pretty strong to me)

Nice, unique botton. I've heard of the "blowhole" buttons, but have never found one. Now I know what I'm looking for!

All of these were found at 1750s/60s French & Indian War sites. Some are quite sturdy, such as those first three in the bottom row. Others were thin and fragile, such as the ones with poorly defined blow holes and no shanks. Not sure what they were made of...wasn't brass.

The fragile one I was referring I believe had a pewter face and brass back. Ahab crushed it

Abe has the strength of Moby Dick :laughing7:
Some of the ones in my pic appear to be pewter. They are light and fragile and must have had iron wire shanks. You can see the first two in the top row I had to coat to preserve them.

Yup I was pretty mad that Steve found one of my blowhole buttons so I asked if I could see it and split that thing in two then then stomped on it. Then handed it back in small pieces and said "cool button Steve! Not in very good condition though." After that I dug pewter spoons and complete buckles and a pile of buttons in retaliation. Not sure Steve will ever hand me another find.

To the op that's a nice sturdy blowhole. Congrats
