A large example, late prehistoric. Made of of catlinite.

Of all the pipe types, the Disk design saw the widest geographic distribution. They have been found in many States east of the Rockies. Where did they come up with this design and why? It was used from late woodland all the way to historic and transcended many cultures.
This pipe design has always fascinated me.... Is it a UFO? the Enterprise? IMG_4116_1.webpIMG_4117_1.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1577635631.396730.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1577635640.278034.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1577635652.729443.webp

Positively definitely maybe UFO.:laughing7: kiddin, don't know what that thing is.

Interesting piece.

You have any info on it? Where found, who found it, who's collection was it in? Thanks.

Bill Platter collection. Collected prior to 1965. Western KY no county.

Quite a piece. Definitely makes you wonder where they got the idea.

I did some online research & there are a lot of these disk type pipes in collections. Also they are heavily faked too as are any high end artifacts. Almost all are made of Catlinite from Minnesota. Late Woodland to Mississippian. I tried to upload it to this thread but my tablet runs on charcoal and wouldn't do it!

They were also made into the historic era in the midwestern plains. Naturally aged catlinite is a dark red to maroon.

Wow, never seen one like that. Can you imagine finding something like that? It does kind of look like the enterprise, maybe they made contact? Ancient Aliens

Are these pipes you are posting complete? Or do they have a wooden mouthpiece that has long since disintegrated? Or do we know? They look difficult to use as is.

Yes they are complete. Yes some may have used cane or a wooded piece that attached to the stem of the pipe. I have a Hopewell pipe that looks like it may have a piece of bone stuck in the stem “toke hole”. Like a hallow bird bone.

I have a little one from Indiana. The burned residue is in the "stem", not the disc. On some of these disk pipes I think they were held differently that many people assume. The user "kissed the sun" vs holding it flat.

In my experience, the material that holds that carbon best is steatite. For some reason pipestone bowls remain clean. I agree with you about how they may have been held. I’ll have to check on the mine. That would be interesting if it showed carbon residue, in the stem.

Nice pipe. Like Josh said, the bowl is the long stem part, and the tail is the hand hold. I would assume the bowl to be darker from use. Weird design, maybe a turtle with that tail. Thanks for sharing.

I was imagining the "kissing the sun" smoking technique and did a search for "native american stone disc pipe" and found these pics.
The first pic has a spiral (stem?) coming out of what would be the bowl if you were "kissing the sun".
The second pic is a modern reproduction but stem in same location.
Third and fourth pics just because...
Someone needs to invent a time machine already.

Thanks for putting a size reference in with your picture, nice pipe for sure. Great artifacts discovered back in the day, when we were clearing Indian sites for today's civilization, leveling mounds and digging up graves..........these people knew how to survive, and be responsible for themselves, until the British, claimed this land for civilization. And they still rule this land today......nothing has changed In over !0,000 years. Food, water, and shelter for the day.
