That’s the first thing we thought too after searching but the area it was found was early 1800s and the type of button seems much older

I strongly suspect this object is actually a 20th Century collar-pin insignia, missing the usual pin-shaped mounting-stud on its back. Photo of the back, please.

I couldn't find a match online but my feeling is this is a War Saving Service lapel pin from WW1
