Dixon's $20 gold piece from the HL Hunley
Friends of the Hunley
Thought this was kinda cool. It's a short story behind the discovery of Lt. George Dixon's $20 gold piece that saved his life at the battle of Shiloh when he was shot in the leg and the coin absorbed the impact. He eventually went on to command the HL Hunley, a Civil War submarine, keeping the coin with him for good luck, until it was lost after sinking a Union ship in 1864. It was discovered in 1995 and recovered in 2000. The recovery team found the crew's remains inside the sub and then the coin during the recovery of Dixon's remains.
There's a very interesting documentary on Netflix about this whole thing: Secret Weapon of the Confederacy.
