Do we have any teachers on the forums?

I am serious, do they even teach American history and government any more. When I was in school we had American history classess from 6-12 grades, also had world history and government. I also took American history first year of college before i dopped out.

We studied the Constitution and our founding fathers, we studied why this country was founded and on what principles it was founded on. We were required to memorize the preamble to the constitution and even Lincoln's Gettysburg address. From some of the comments made both here, and other places on the net i have to wonder if it is even taught any longer....:icon_scratch:

"Sub"... PRE-SELECTED, yeah.

I have 3 girls in grade school. With the advent of standardize testing definitely more focus on math, English, science. I will say that I was happy to hear they still all start the day with the pledge and do say one nation under god.

My belief is that there needs to be a specific "civics" course which teaches the ins and outs of our government, laws, etc in an unbiased factual way - without political bias. Give our children the knowledge young and then they can form their own opinions over time but will be less likely to be manipulated to any side.

I would argue that knowledge is just as powerful as weapons to protect against a despotic government. They generally don't conquer with guns, but with the apathy of the majority of the population!

Good topic.

starting with sputnik, the government mandated more science and math and less history, english, arts, etc.

From what I saw of my kids history books, I would say that some of history has been rewritten, purged, or added to. Lets just say there was, excuse the expression, a liberal lean to the material. It's gets worse in college. frank

I know in this state kids are being taught that the patriots who took part in the Boston tea party were terrorists.

They fill new teachers with Marxism, actually have for years, now go teach your students! Home Schooling is the ONLY way to go. GodBless Chris

TH, what don't they teach that you would like them to? I wasn't taught that the U.S. of A. actually just grabbed Hawaii and deposed their ruler because of Dole Fruit, I wasn't taught about Rosewood, I wasn't taught about why we installed the Shah of Iran nor did either the nuns or the lay teachers talk about why some folks couldn't use certain water fountains.
I was taught that the U.S. of A. stood for all things good and we would never invade other countries like the red bloc would, nor would we ever spy on our citizens or limit their travel. That was something only the commies did. Today I'm a little older and wonder "wth happened?"

Seriously, what isn't taught that you think should be taught.

worldtalker, you have every right to vote for the person of YOUR choice for the board of education, you can also attend every meeting and tell them what you want to see in the textbooks they use. If you sit at home and play on the computer instead, you lose.

Department of education should be abolished......it only furthers the agenda of indoctrination. At my sons school principal was asked at a kindergarten orientation if the pledge was still said and she responded kind of rudely "unfortunately for now!" Anyone care to say the schools are not for indoctrination? American history is looked at as a bunch of wrong doings and a skewed version is taught.

what "skewed" version is taught? I'm missing something here. Maybe fill me in on who asked the principal about the pledge of allegiance, this anecdotal evidence is pretty thin. I once heard of a guy that knew a person that had an uncle who's wifes cousin didn't like mountain dew and skateboarded, but dang it, as hard as I tried to find him......................................................................................................it was impossible based on the evidence.

Davest, I am glad you asked, the skewed version is America is guilty of running over other nations as well as steeling the worlds wealth, among other things. Obviously not true. The person who asked about the pledge was another parent in the bleachers in the gym. We were all seated listening to the principal speaking and at the end she took questions. I was there and I assure you it is true.

Dave I was taught all of those things and I am older than you are so your schooling lack something...

My question was very simple are kids taught American history is school?

The internet has changed many, many things. It's one thing to be taught from generalized and approved books on the subject, however, it is quite another thing to actually be able to access entire document libraries on the subject and the people involved. What was taught in school prior to the internet was "preferred teaching", today there is access to a more complete view of all things.

How many kids are bothering or encouraged to go online and learn history though?

I wish I had real evidence to provide but this is what I remember about a news report. Most text books are printed in Texas. A report stated in one history book being offered to schools that Vietnam took up one paragraph. That feels like it was all for nothing.

That "skewed version" is called "the truth"! And the pledge itself is "indoctrination".

@Hvacker - The US doesn't spend much time teaching things where the US doesn't win or it has no historical interest concerning American history.

H... I think your rite books are printed and way before they get to the school board meetings. So to answer dave the meetings I attended years ago more emphasis was put on the menu then the curriculum. Even today it's more important to change the mascot's name ( because it offends just one person) then what they're teaching.

to answer the thread I say NO the attitude is "What For" That's old people stuff. I guess even when I was young Testosterone had over powered the will to study history.Unless Mary Muchinfutch was my tutor.

Since this is my thread I am locking it................
