I found these two buttons in a large Confederate camp near Sheperdstown W.Va. It was an early camp. Both buttons seem to be identical on front even both are backmarked Benedict & Burnham Extra. But if you look closley at backs there is slight variations. double concentric rings around stem are different sizes. They were found pretty close together, my question is do you think they went together. I am posting in Civil War because these were found in Civil War camp. I did not even notice difference until I uploaded pictures and had buttons side by side.

I would think they were from the same garment since they are so alike in appearance and same mfg. I don't think that slight back mark variations would be uncommon for the times.

I think it is just a variation of the backmark. B & B were in business from 1834-1843 when it became B & B MFG. In 1849 the button making department became the Waterbury Button Co.

Cool Buttons but the ID ; is above my knowledge.
