Do you allways noise cancel when you start detecting?

As the title say's you allways use noise-cancel or is there some situations where you feel you don't need to and why.
I am asking this since i am new to this detector (explorer xs) and it seems strange to me that if my detector uses multiple frequencies, to start out with limiting the frequencies to use. Especially if noise-cancelling means it just uses 1.
Any input is thankfully received.

There's a whole thread on this on the Minelab forum and you'll have to decide what you want to believe. I just get in trouble when I try to help people.

PS... It doesn't change to one freq., it just changes the selection of the group it's using to better suit the conditions.

If you're new, and can't tell what's interference or ground noise, it doesn't hurt to hit it to make sure. That said, it won't take long to tell the difference from the two, and if your detector is running smooth there's no great advantage to the noise cancel. People on that thread posted about the noise cancel finding them more, and that is simply not true. Someone posted a paragraph or two from Minelab and I believe it actually said in that it won't affect depth or discrimination, which of course is what I agree with. People said that it is very important to hit the noise cancel at the start of the hunt, and even though they admit to conditions always changing, they don't advise to keep hitting it. That makes no sense, either you believe what I do, or you have to keep hitting it the entire hunt to make sure you're "not missing targets." My opinion is based on 9 staright years using an Explorer XS or II, and I've owned both at once. I don't mind debating points, but when someone needs a book and someone else's thoughts to counter, then it's time for me to drop out.

PS... As a side note for bad interference you'll almost always have to adjust your sense in addition to the noise cancel. Electric fences can be brutal, as well as some radio towers. Regular powerlines don't seem to be too bad, at least in my area.

if thats the best counterpoint they can come up with, then my decision well be : I wont hit noise cancel at the start of the hunt. Only hit it if I get audible interference.
I will stick with this untill proven wrong.

Well the funny part of the whole thing is it doesn't matter! If the detector seems good you don't need it at all, or hit it once at the start, or hit it once every 5 minutes if you want! If you read the thread you seen the part I said it was starting to bug me because it's such a minor thing. Heck, what site you hunt is a million times more important than noise cancelling a dozen times.

At least in the old days it was Iron mask we talked about.

I never use it. And I been all around power lines, telephone wires, satellite dishs, ect. Only noise I cancel is Iron.
