I am also looking for a book or website that addresses the evolution of chain and how one can date various chains by their links. Any ideas?

I dont think its possible to get very accurate date , forge welding goes back thousands of years gas welding to the late 1800s and arc welding around early 1900s . But even forge welding is still done just not as much.

I would guess the closer to machine made chain you get the more uniform the links become. In the monster movies the links of old chain were hammered and square.

Here's how blacksmiths made chains way back when.

Note --- you can see the welds where it was hammered together.
