I have a Vibra Probe and it is suppose to be waterproof. Has anyone had any experience with this in the water? I have a new water detector (my first) but won't be able to use it for another 2 weeks (when I go on vaction) and I am trying to get everything together for some great water hunting. Does anyone have any input for a newbie to the water? Here is a pic of my strainer I put together last night. I finally found a use for those old swimming noodles.

Well, we have the Minelab Explorer II which seems to work great in the surf (to me anyways). When you say Probe, are you meaning, Pinpointer? I have used my pinpointer in the surf and it works fine. I do not submerse it though, just the pointer part.

Liking your little strainer there....we have some of those tubes around here...will have to show hubby your nice little strainer.

Good luck on your vacation and have a great time as well :)

Yes, I mean pinpointer. The vibraprobe is suppose to be submersible and I thought I would be easier to reach down for shallow targets and pull the item out of the sand if I could pinpoint it.

Hey thats a noodle strainer...cool....I know what I will be doing tonight.....I cut foam for reupholstering with my electric knife...guess that would work on the noodles also...

Sorry, trying to learn all the MD'ing jargon....

We have two of the Automax Precison V4 Pinpointers and this is its features: Built-in audio indication • Super-bright LED target indication light • Super v4 Vibrator • Toggle ON/OFF • Target sensitivity control • Long and Deep Probe • Waterproof copper wound HP coil • Rugged construction • Surface mount technology • Easy removable battery door • Ergonomically designed handle • Belt Clip easily clips to all size belts • Operates on 9 volt battery (battery not included) • 1-year warranty

Now...mine does not say it's submersible...so I don't attempt it...but I have dug some coins up from the surf while digging and worked great in the water. I don't see where you could go wrong with yours!!!

Now, I am not familiar with the construction of the one you have, but hubby broke his probe!! UGH!! Anyways, you know those cigar cases, the ones where you buy a single cigar and it comes in a plastic case? Well, I found one of those on the beach and hubby cut the end of the cigar case tip off and put it on his broken probe. The casing of the probe broke apart, the wiring was intact. He just found another one and will put that on my probe (see, you got me say probe LOL). It makes it stiffer and more stable and prevents scratches on my probe :)

Good luck....and hope you find lots of great items :)

http://www.kellycodetectors.com/accessories/goodbetter.htm <<here's ours. The page for the actual pinpointer won't come up now...maybe their website is having probs. I just had it up a few mins ago UGH.... It's the third pic down. I'll have to get one of those razor edge digging tools though...I like that :)

I like yours. And the batteries are incased within the handle. It looks like to me...it's very waterproof. Keep your receipt...cause if you have probs....send it back!! The probe looks fatter than ours those (but maybe not...just the angle I am looking at I guess)...don't know if those cigar cases would work. I like that mini detector...that is the cutest!!!! Do you have that too? I saved that link so hubby can check it out.

no, the only one I have is the Vibra Probe .

A probe isn't needed in the water. Once you locate a target you place your foot along side the coil and place the scoop near your heel after you move the coil out of the way, and scoop. Shake the scoop to sift the sand out and the target should be inside. The use of a screen sifter like you made may not be of any use because of waves tipping it over and little kids wanting a ride on it or just a fast grab at a ring or coin they saw on the screen. Good Bye goodie..........hello jail time if you hit the kid with your scoop.

Sandman

Good Advice about hitting the kid sandman! I made the strainer for detecting in lakes and ponds where there isn't a sandy bottom. I will be going home to NY (on vacation) in July and will be searching an old swimming area in a lake. I am pretty sure the bottom of the lake will be mostly mud and I thing it will be a lot easier to retrieve the target in the strainer than in the scoop. Since this is a lake there won't be any waves and I don't have to worry about the kids because this particular beach I will be searching hasn't been used in about 75 years. Should just be me and the wife out there.

I use one of the pvc floats also when detecting in the bay water where its calmer than the oceanfront. No problem with it except its another thing i need to carry to the water. In the bay we get alot of rocks and shells and it sometimes makes it easier to sort things out. Never had any kids bother me in the bay, i do get a kick out of the fish that follow me as im digging up the bottom, i guess its free snacks for them.

i have a sifter like that i am going to use on the lake near my house. i also have an old metal milk crate lined on the bottom and four sides with the same mesh that i drag around piers with.
